IGNITION CUT OUT/NEUTRAL SWITCH
Permalink

Hi
Mine's an ex field bike that I've put all the electrics back.
I thought I'd finished, everything worked, lights indicators the lot.
For the first time since I got it I put it into gear whilst running.
It instantly cuts out. Not stalling, but acting as though the ignition was being switched off.
The stand switch is missing, so I guessed the fact it's on the stand doesn't matter.
Anyone got any ideas - as I say never having used or had it working, I'm not sure it's not just me who's missing something I need switch on/off
Happens the same going into 1st or 2nd
Dont know how to disconnect the neutral switch

You need a new stand switch, in an emergency you can short out the connectors where the stand switch would plug into, however i would NOT recommend you do this as it can be extremely dangerous even fatal if you forget to put the stand up and ride off.
Just get a working switch.

DeeTee, thanks for taking the time to reply. I have a switch on order. I'd assumed a problem with the neutral switch & that the stand would be OK. It does though make sense that a missing switch defaults to the safe setting, ie as though the stand is down
Once again thanks

I also reckon it's the side stand switch, when i got my first DTR (First bike for that matter lol) I'd kick it up while it was on the stand then knock it into gear (with the stand down) and kept wondering why it kept cutting out. In the end i rung a local mechanic and asked if the stand was up when i knocked it into gear, and told me to do it with the stand up. Boy did i feel like a idiot and i bet he had a few laughs after the phone call lol. But yeah disconnect the wires until your side stand switch comes and see if it is still playing up, i wouldn't recomend going too far/fast cause if its an old field bike the stand will have probably took some right hammer and might just randomly come down which would be very dangerous indeed. Good luck with it and when it's all sorted get some photo's uploaded :D
