Just thought it was time to share my 89 dt125r retro project. Just a couple of mods

Single swinger

17 rims

Usds

89 frame with chopped sub frame

79 tank mint and unused still in box after 30 years shame to strip and spray it but I hate red.

Complete engine rebuild, all new seals and bearings all stainless nuts bolts and studs. Oil pump removed to run on pre mix. On the fly power valve adjustment and toying with fuel injection as I found a jap kit that might fit.

alloy rad to be mounted under carbon seat unit witch I have just started shaping (looks like a ccm FT710 seat

Will make expansion chamber myself as soon as I get a new tig. unless anyone knows where to get an old school style pipe to go on an 89 engine.

If you have any good ideas Ive got big ears........ no

Nice project winkle, why spoil the old tank though? seems a shame to do that. plenty of other tanks around for a re-spray.

thanks all, I was starting to get fed up with people around me keep saying "it would have been easier to buy a whole bike" and yes it would but that's not the point is it. Anyway I've not done much with it the last couple of weeks as I'm building an extension on my workshop, new metalshop to keep my build area clean and small spray room in the cellar (yes there is an extractor).


Not shore what the usd's are from. I got them at a car boot sale, all i know is that thay came off an 07 bike but I'm going to swop them because there a bit tight on the 110/70-17 tyre.

As for the tank, yes I could sell it and buy an old tank and have money left for a re spray but it was a 30th birthday present from my wife (try finding a new 79 dt tank)

just to let you know the reason there has been no movement on the bike is that I'm moving to norfolk. I'm going to sell my house in herts and buy a bigger house with land and a bigger workshop.

af1, not an easy swap. had to flip and rework the pivot, graft on a dt linkage and mod the sprocket but looks good.. I think

Tell me about it, middle of house rennovation (major) so no time or money to spend on building my bike workshop.....

Although not to my taste this is from an engineering perspective an interesting project.

no change, the bikes packed up ready to move house. But the good news is I'm making a killing on the sale, so no expense spared on finishing it. lol

Don't worry I've not given up. I still haven't had my new workshop built as the house has to come first so the bike is still in boxes (blame the wife), but on a good note my budget is now a lot bigger. I promise to update as soon as its under way again!   Sorry for the delay...

I didn't even think you even used this website anymore. Really loving the build man. I've got some inspiration from you. Going with the USD and RS wheels. The swing arm though. Didn't think of that. Think that one is too much of a challenge for me. Maybe later on.
