Hey folks, i'm half way through running my top end in, just hit 250 miles. Noticed today that black oil is leaking from the exhaust gasket, the exhaust joint and also coming out of the back of the exhaust. Have a look at this:
Checked the spark plug, the top appears normal there is just oil on the thread:
The bike does run fine, I just dont know why it's doing this. If the pipes the wrong way round from the carb to the cylinder could this cause the problem. Could you confirm for me, hope you can see by this picture:
Many thanks

Its just because ur not using it to its full potential as your running it in. Did you use a new exhaust gasket? Maybe just smear some gungum around the join, thats what i always do, as for the rear pipe there should be a rubber bung joining the two which would stop it leaking there.
dunno which model bike hes got but my 56 plate dtx never had a bung between front n rear pipes just jubilee clip ,am rebuiling my top end this weekend so am quite interested in this thread , so long as the tossers at sep are open this weekend .. Dave also what is the purpose of the carb heating hoses ? yes i know to warm it up but to what end? when i took my head to bits the water ways coming from the head , the bit with what looks like a pin in it with a hole thru were totally blocked with brown crud !!!

i removed the carb heater pipes did not notice a difrence take your front pipe of and put some silicone on the manafold and use a bung or old fad pipe on the pipe ther is alot more oil present due to you runing it in as the exhaust dose not get very hot so the oil will spit out
Thanks for that guys, thought something was buggered! Wasn't a good feeling when I looked down and saw that crap comin out all over the place, especially as i've just got it running nice after the rebuild.
It's a 57 plate, our bikes are identical hairdoo...well more or less
There used to be a bung on there but it had disintegrated from the heat, I replaced it but the same happened again. And delve mate, the exhaust gasket was replaced a few months ago it still looks in good nick.
Will it eventually stop spitting out oil?
So both those pipes are just warmer hoses then, they don't carry any fluids down them?
Both pipes carry water to the carb, they are to prevent carb icing in cold weather. They are not flow-direction critical, just make sure they are water tight and you'll be fine with them.
