Front Spocket Removal
Permalink

I've got 2 new sprockets, rear and front. Here is a pic first:

I can't for the life of me remove that big nut holding the front sprocket in. I've had someone stand on the back brake so the bike doesn't move but i can't get the nut to budge. I'm using a big adjustable spanner, am i doing something wrong?

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

A 2 stroke is very much the same.

They are hammered into place, smack the spanner with a hammer to break the seal, make sure you do it the right way lol

Just get a **** off wrench and pull, and adjustables not really man enough. Sometimes I just get a bar on the end of a wrench to give more leverage.

^^ Swear word filter is also ftl lol.

What's a pull bar Nathan?

Are the front sprockets normally quite difficult to remove then. No reason why it should be a reverse thread i'm thinking hmmmm

Any ideas what those little bits of metal sticking out are at the top of the nut, they look like ears. There is also one at the bottom but can't be seen in the pic. Haynes manual doesn't give away much.

they'll be a tab washer that sits underneath and you  pull those tabs over the side of the nut to hold it in place, i recon he means a breaker bar btw

Cheers mate I bent the tabs back flat but the little bugger still wont budge, I'm still only using this large adjustable spanner which is all i've got at the moment lol. Someone suggested to me today a windy gun would do the trick, I don't have one of those either but there is a guy down the road from me who has his own service and repair workshop - gonna try him tomorrow.

Damn after picking up the sprockets I thought I would have them all changed over in half an hour at the weekend.

I think thats your problem lol, use a correct size socket with an extension bar on your ratchet, if you still can't get it off go and see the guy with the 'windy gun'

smile

If you do have trouble getting it off take it to an engineering place. Couldn't get a bolt off my engine once, gave up and took it down the road and he had it off in literely 30 secs lol.

Finally got it off, I took the bike down the road to the workshop. He let me use his tools and didn't charge me a thing, how great is that!

Windy gun made light work of it and I was in and out within 5 min. Got to add one of those to my tool kit now.
