Hi, Im going to be getting a full set of blue plastics from the portugal guy in a week or so. Ive got two petrol tanks but both are in bad condition. So i want to spray one yamaha blue, But how do i find the paint? or has anyone got a tank in good nick?
Took the tank completly down to bare metal (obviously); doing this I used Mangers Paint and Varnish Stripper. Then sanded it down till the entire thing was smooth as a babys butt. I then washed it and let it dry out properly for a day, then went over it again with some more water, making sure it was completly clean.
Then I got some Hammerite Rust Beater, coated the tank in a nice layer of that, concentrating on the welding joins and around the fuel cap hole left it for 6 hours, then sanded it down till all was completly smooth again, then after this I put a nice fine layer of Hammerites Anti-corrosion paint over the rust beater (Putting it underneath makes the rust beater absolutly pointless) then left for a thurther 6 hours (day over) and then sanded that down again.
Then I gave it a nice helping of standard Grey Primer, sanded down till smooth and then I added a layer of Yellow Plastic Primer {When the Grey was just about to be completly dry} then OFC, sanded this down till completly smooth (Plastic primer is good for when you stack ya bike and get a dent, it's "flexible") then again with the normal primer covering the Yellow then sanded down.
I hung it out in a nice warm room to dry out for a minimum of 12 hours, that way I knew everything "sould be" dry by then, then gave it a smooth sanding down just to make sure all was smooth.
After this, I put yet again, a nice fine layer of Rust Beater around the welding joins just for extra protection and sanded down.
Then for the grand finalie, I used just under 3 rattle cans of Hammerite's White Smooth (change color for your bike OFC) literally just dusting the tank with the paint, took me about 8 hours to completly cover the tank giving it a super fine layer every hour (had it in a real nice warm room so each layer was perfect to spray ontop of).
Once it was completly coverd, I checked for runs (none.. cuz I'm a spray-painter) and gave it another sand over just to make sure all would be completly smooth, and then added more white to build up the color, then left to hang for the rest of the day.
Then to finish, I used 2 rattle cans of Halfords Petrol Resistant Lacquer making sure it went on warm, and the surface was warm too, if it's cold, it'll sometimes go dull and then end up ruining everything, also, making sure i'd sanded down the 2nd to last layer of white so the final layer was totally smooth and the Lacquer would go on completly smooth aswell.
If you CBA to do all this and want to save money... Just get 1 can of primer, 2 cans of the color, and 1 can of petti lacquer and bash it out in a day.
But for best results, my way is pretty darn effective and the white comes out white white and looks just as good as it were powdercoated
All I'd charge is material costs, I *did* (till i became 'ill') spraying for a living, so it'd only be helping me get better at my job and as for powerdercoating I went to the local pay n' spray near me, and they quoted me £130 - 150 to do my tank, i told 'em where to shove it, and did it myself. I'll get some HQ pics tomorrow of it and you can see for yourself how well mine came out
Lol, I don't mind, I got a lotta spare time atm, and looks good eh? xD And I bought the bike like that, the original owner caught it on a fence or sumat and "stapled" it together, I kinda like it, give shte side some attitude xD (ofc I'll replace it soon tho x])
Im not good at spraying and ive got no patience. So i cheated and bought the best one i could find on ebay. Looks good in the pitures but im waiting for it to be delivered. was only £26 and £10 delivery. dtcrazedkid your tank looks mint
