Power Valve not cutting in smoothly??

Hi,

I have a TDR 125 on a 95 plate it has been de-restricted and has been running o.k.
The problem I have is that when the bike is going into the power band in a higher gear i.e. 4th to 5th or 5th to 6th  is won't go into the band smoothly it seems to hold back.
If you then change down you can rev it through the gears if you keep the revs above 8,000. Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks in advance

What exhaust do you have? I seem'd to have this problem with my DT, just bulked out when went into 4th to 5th ( no point going to 6th gear, just bulked out mega bad and made me drop down a couple gears to get revvs back up) in the PV, I blame it on the DEP Pipe I put on, didn't seem to have any probs with standard pipe (from what I remember) + do you have full compression? I was told lack of compression; old and worn piston/rings will effect the power of the bike in higher gears too rendering the powervalves power

Thanks for that Crazed Kid. I have had the bike 2 years and it has been running fine on the power pipe I have up until this winter.
I will have a look at the compression whats the best way to check this out as I am a complete novice?

Cheers

Either put your thumb over the sparkplug hole then try getting someone or use your arm to kick it over and see if the air blasts your thumb off with ease, if you can kick it via arm (just a nice soft push to get piston moving) and it blows your thumb off with great ease and fells like it was a powerfull blow, it's all good.

Or use a compression tester if you have one, if not, I'd recommend buying one, they're handy things to have.

Thamx for that will give it a try. Have been reading through other posts. Is it worth cleaning the power valve or replacing the reeds?

cheers

That depends, do you have original ones or carbon ones? If they're still a strong yellowish color and have no dmg to them, then I don't see the need in changing them, also you could try cleaning the PV, I never tried that, which now you've mentiond it, I might give it a go.

Thanks again I will have a quick peek at the weekend and try to clean the valve out. Let me know how you get on with cleaning the valve out and if it was any good.

Cheers

got her cleaned, and now it's bloody raining, so no ride for me :/
here's before and after pics for ya.
also, if you cant seem to clean the shyte off, get a bit of 1200 wet n dry, that'll do it nicely without ruinin the valve

I have now cleaned the valve and the bike is now running smoothly through the gears, although the top end is not quite so high but I can live with that.biggrin

Would have thought having a cleaner pv would only affect a servo assisted one, the servo wouldn't have any crud to contend with when pulling it round. Happened with mine and actually stopped moving in the barrel it was so dirty omg.gif

it'll work better cleaner, the shyte all over the pv will stop the flow functioning properly, mine was a state before i cleaned it out, and it went back in at exactly the same place as i took it out, and have an instant performance change.
if anything.. it's like, port and flowing, smoothing the area's point of effect.

+1 on that yeah makes alot of sense actually, would help to eliminate any problems out of the bigger picture too if the problem persists :)

Mine is still doing this at the moment, so I took my PV out and cleaned it on monday, instant improvement, but then the spark plug went south :( I know the rings need doing as my compression is crap!

So if the rest of my parts turn up tomorrow (I only have my gasket set so far) I'll be doing a top end rebuild and a plug change at the weekend, won't be able to say what the results are until I've run the new rings in but I'll keep you posted
