Im kinda new to bikes but good with my hands, im hoping to do a service on my DT 125R which i got 2 days ago. Its a 2002 and in great condition. 3 owners from new one a priest the other a building architect lol. Anyways the bike is still restricted meaning nobody has played around with it which is another good sign. I wont be using the bike for a couple of weeks as im moving and its stored in a friends house at the moment. I really have had zero time to look it now. But when im free i plan on doing the following. I have put together a little service to do list but not sure if im going overboard. Any help would be great
(Buy a compression tester) You want over 130psi maybe more. If 120 or lower change those piston rings!
(TAKE Restrictor out of exaust, and out of the clock)
1. Empty all petrol out.
2. Empty out and change 2-Stroke oil.
3. Empty out and change Transmission oil.
4. Empty out and change coolant.
5. Empty out and change raditor water.
6. Take out and replace spark plug.
7. Take out airfilter and clean or replace.
8. Make sure powerValve is working, ajust and clean if necessary.
9. Take off and clean carb and jets.
10. Check reed valve and replace if necessary.
11. Check the spark plug cap for good connection.
12. Take off exaust and clean deposits.
13. Check Battery acid level and fill with distilled water if necessary.
14. Check throttle cable and ajust and lube if necessary.
15. Check clutch cable and ajust and lube if necessary.
in my ts i use **** semi 2t but in my dt when i get on the road on it im going to use Castrol TTS fully synthetic there is anuther really good one evry one recomends and for gearbox id go for the castrol again but thats me and im probly wrone ull need someone like seki or bradder to say wich one they recomend
I use catrol TTS power 2T in mine, Mostly because its good quality and easy to get anywhere (halfords) :D But, the best too get out of what you have listed is (i would say) Silkolene COMP 2 INJECTOR. Really good stuff. If you got any friends who do MX, they might say Rock Oil which is pretty good but stupidly hard too find.
Everyone is different and just use what ever you find best. :) As for Gearbox oil, Id go with the Castrol MTX SAE 10W-40 as its pretty good quality. although, never had experience with anything else so dont take my word for that. :)
Just to make you all aware, Castrol will be changing the name and the bottle for TTS, it will now be called 'Castrol Racing 2T' and be in a gold bottle! And probably cost more money lol.
Anyway, I wouldn't have thought you were going overboard, there's nothing wrong with being meticulous, 2 of the points on the check list are the same though, coolant and radiator water are the same job!
Might be worth checking over all your petrol filters as well, there is usually a small filter in the carb and another in the fuel tap itself. If you check them out now, you rule out that issue at a later date.
Also, the compression is perfectly good as far down as 95psi in my experience, mine is currently running 85psi and still pottering around quite happily (I'm waiting for new piston rings to be posted!) although the lower compression does make 6th gear completely useless, and I can start the bike by hand using the kickstart! I also think you'd be lucky to achieve 130psi from this engine. My old Cagiva Mito was only just running 130psi when I rebuilt the top end, and that had practically double the horsepower.
As for engine oil, silkolene light gear oil (10w 40) is what I tend to use, good stuff in my experience.

Hi m8y, you've got a good list on there m8 pretty much everything tht I would check, The 2t oil I use is the silkolene pro comp 2 injector , thts wat my local yam dealer recommends as I asked them wat is goin to provide the best protection against harsh conditions ie ragging the **** outer it lol (reason for that is I race my dt in enduros lol) and they have all the castrol oils u listed and yamahas own oil , yamalube, n thts wat they recommend to me. I would go for the silkolene coolant aswell it's especially for bikes due to harsh conditions and high running temp, Air filter, clean thoroughly with hot soapy water (the original fairy washing up liquid will do fine)Just make sure it's dry as ghandi's flip flops after, leave it on the radiator over nite is best , also lightly coat it in air filter oil or 2t oil, jus don't go too mad with it, only replace filter if its falling apart, Spark plug, jus get the standard ngk one br9es dnt bother with with an iridium tipped one, I brought one but it gave me nothing but trouble, dunno if thts the case with anywon else? But I'd never get one again plus there quite expensive lol Also check ur chain and sprockets for wear aswell as tension, yam dealer do a oem complete kit for bout 50 quid for standard type chain n 80 odd+ for o ring chain kit , I'm running o ring for longer life n less maintenance , but u will lose a bit of power with the o ring chains as they are a fair bit stiffer than normal, Gear box, use 4t engine oil as that's wat yam recommend get a good quality oil check the API number on the bottle higher the better quality eg 3a is a good one as opposed to 1c is ****e . Oh yea chain lube, get a proper chain lube if u can dnt use wd40 or any like tht , wd is good for cleaning it while using an old tooth brush , but make sure u lube it well after , I managed to acquire some rock oil chain lube n it's really good stuff sticks like s"it to a blanket lol jus try not spray it every wer coz it's a bitch to clean off , Err think thts pretty much it tbh aswell as all the other bits u got listed to do, only one thing I wouldn't bother taking the carb apart unless ur getting running problems , dunno bout ur yam dealer but mine had to order in a gasket set for me from Japan and seeing as Japan took a beating from tht earthquake n **** u might av a hard time gettin the bits u need for it,
Good luck m8 keep us updated and let us know if u run into trouble, we'll be happy to help as much as we can : )
Thanks toysoldier for recommending me for advise..top man : )
Always had the same issues with Iridium plugs in 2T bikes by the way, they work well for about 5 minutes then the bike eats them!

I think that list will get everything sorted. I really dont want to mess with the carb, so i will leave that alone for the moment. I will however check the 2 fuel filters as (mammoth200) recommended. Iam a bit worried as i can turn the engine over with the kick start lever by hand! Its easy. I guess that means poor compression? I better find some new P rings too.
I have bought some Silkolene COMP 2 INJECTOR. I have heard alot of people use it. The Castrol TTS or new "Castrol Power 1 Racing 2T" name is 18 euro per ltr! Were as comp 2 is 13 euro. I think i will also go with the silkolene light gear oil for the gearbox. Not too sure about using 4T gearbox oil, the DTR is a 2 stroke not 4, wont the oil be thicker? Dont want to chance it.

You can use the 4 stroke oil in the bottom end, but I don't recommend it, as it isn't designed to be used with 2 stroke clutch friction plates imo. I know people have used it in the past, but you may as well use the intended product really, thats what it has been designed for!
I can also start my bike by hand! In fact, I frequently do, as its faster than climbing over the bike and kicking it! Hopefully that will change when I do my rings.
