Strange noise...Detonation????

Ok so was out t'other day. bike sat in sun all day whilst i was chilling, then rode in heavy traffic/roadworks for 20 or so mins, mostly at stand still. Then a dual caridge way blast...after a bit i started losing power so i assumed low petrol, switched to reserve whilst i was coasting but was literally just outside petrol station anyway so pulled in. when i got off my bike it was making a horrid noise. sounded like tiny bits of metal flying round the engine...cooled the bike down with a hose after re-fueling and it seemed fine, few days later fired it up again and sounds fine still. any ideas?? its not losing compression and sounds fine, just a bit wierd eh? Only thing i can think of is detination...like pre ignition. one thing that can cause it is lean AF ratio. I do have my snorkel removed...could this be making it run lean then pre-ignite when its reaaaally hot???

Any other theories?

Best thing to do m8 is take the exhaust off n see if u can see any damage to the piston, if not then I would really slide the barrel off n check the piston skirts, jus to be safe m8 last thing u wanna do is a rebore coz tht means running in the new piston,

Your fine, don't panic, that's just a hot engine mate! When your sat in traffic on a hot day, its pretty safe to assume your engine gets f*cking hot. when you stop, that pinging noise is created when your exhaust cools and contracts :)

The power loss is down to the fact that the engine was operating outside of its comfort zone, when your exhaust and engine is heated up, so is the fuel mixture.

Part of the combustion process involves the mixture exiting the cylinder, which then gets forced back into the top of the cylinder by the back pressure and combusts. When things are too hot, the mixture expands and becomes slightly less effective, creating power loss. There is more to it but that's probably the best way to explain it!

If your still a little unsure, by all means follow Brads advice for peace of mind! :)

Yeah most vehicles do it buddy! if you open the bonnet on a car after its done 30 or so miles, you can hear the same noise coming from the exhaust on that too :)
