Hi i am new to the forum and i have just purchased a dt which needs a bit of work doing and have some questions about it and would appreciate any help full input.

1.there is a small gap between the piston barrel and the barrel head(the lid on the top end) should it be there.

2.i was riding home the other night and the clutch suddenly stopped working eg.i put it in gear whith clutch held in and it stalls basically it wont disengage is it just that there is no oil in there and its stuck together?.

3.its dripping oil from underneath ive checked and theres no crack so i presume its the crank seal has any one ever replaiced it them self and how easy is it if not how mutch did it cost to get it done.

4.it needs a new wiring loom i can get one for 120pounds but how easy will it be to fit because ive never fit one before.

thanks in advance for any help-advice you guys can give ps/its a 89 engine i think and its had the piston barel machinedsmile sorry for spelling i was typing FAST!

Technically you're meant to introduce yourself in the noob section and then branch off to individual sections which have been set up for each part of the bike, not General chat. (as per rules) But it's done now so ..

Pic of gap please, not sure what you're talking about

sounds like clutch plates sticking

get a genuine gasket from yamaha about £5

Get a second hand loom in good nick, it's easy to plug in everything has connectors on them and go in obvious places. Get a Haynes manual to help you along the way

Welcome to the site, get pics up wink

I can tell ya now. My bike is STILL in the garage and it's been in there for weeks/months having a ful rebuild. this weekend il have apaid £290 to the garage. The garage have only just sent off the crank to be pressed so i'm looking at another 2weeks or more before it's finished. I wanted it back this weekend as im moving house. I was quite pissed off when they said the bike will be done before im finished paying for it.?? I was like well ive paid £180 so far. They never said how much it will be.

if any one can tell me wat that gap is caused by the engine still runs perfect revs right through the power band i might just undo the bolts and hit it with a rubber mallet lol to see if it goes in.

ok so i think previous owner put a tzr top end as it just doesn't look right they said its been machine bored and it is proper fast!! but if that gap was a problem it wouldn't run as well as it does and it would be loosing compression any one have any idea because i want to get started on the rebuild but id rather get the engine sorted first.

looks like the old type of cylinder head, very similar to the one my brother had on his NSR 125, had a fecking great gap round the edge like that. As long as the compression is good, no need to worry really.

do you think the fact that there is no gear/clutch oil in the bike is the reason the clutch has stuck together? just need a second opinion

It's defo either ther tzr or lc top end , IMO I reckon it's the tzr top end , and as longvas it's holding coolant and has good compression ur ok but wer is ur clutch cable?? I can't see it in the pic? Looks like it's the thing jus hangin in front of the plastic cover in the second pic??

i had halfway taken it off i definitely haven't forgotten to check that lol, yh turns out it is the tzr top end i had a look at a couple of tzr engine picks on google and was the exact same turns out its a rare mod to do allot of forums had people saying its not possible that's what was confusing me.with the clutch cover how much of a job is that?

U might be able to do it like that m8 use a sharp pick to dig it out just don't damage the casing around it , and put fresh oil in there after aswell it might sort out ur dodgy clutch problem , I'd recommend buying a litre of really cheap oil run it on that for a few miles then drain that out completely while it's warm(NOT HOT) then fill with good stuff , if that don't help m8 it's gonna av to be right hand side casing off then adjust it from the push rod , try all tht first then let us know how u get on , and get a haynes manual while ur at it m8
