noticed mines been losing a little coolant for a few runs now on my last run the temp gauge nearlly hit 3 quarters of the way up its never done it before and the coolant expansion tanks blown its top off..
it got warm guys, I did a 30 miles trip over the weekend and the temp gauge was all over the place, it was f*cking hot though!! If it is genuinely overheating, start by popping some fresh coolant in there, keep a keen eye on the gauge, and if it is still doing it, it could be a couple of things, but you should hopefully be able to nip it in the bud nice and early before it causes you any problems.

Ok, i took the thermostat out and bled the coolant system but it still seems to be leaking out of the expansion tank everytime i ride the bike! ? too much pressure or ? i need help =D
Yeah i took it to a propper garage, also if it was the head gasket wouldn't starting it up be a problem as the spark plug would get wet from the coolant ? how would the head gasket make it come out of the expansion tank \?
yeah would start fine sorry was the paper base gasket not the actual rubber gasket. and it will pressurise the system thats whys it comes out the espansion tank.had to pull over loads of time for my mate to fill it back up.defo worth trying it mate if nothing else works.if you nly had it done over a month ago i would go back to the dealer and ask them to sort it for you
It definitely sounds like a head gasket. The only way I have found to fix it is to check the head is flat with a steel straight edge. It must be not be warped by more than 1 thou. If it is either get it machined flat or lap it in on plate of glass or a mirror (a dead flat smooth surface) using a sheet of wet and dry or grinding paste. Then you must use a genuine Yamaha head gasket when you put it back together. Ive tried using a pattern gasket and a very high spec silicone sealanjt but it only lasts a few days. There should be a number of old posts on the subject in this forum. Good luck!
ok so you have the thermo out anyway....when bike is cold ..remove rad cap and start the bike....look inside the rad and you should see the coolant flowing into the rad ...
can you deffinatly see it flowing and is it flowing well ???????
let us know fella coz got an idea but need to know this first
Ive now got the cyclinder head skimmed, and a yammy head gasket .Always had heating problem, with pattern gaskets , ive then gt it fixed and it was fine not even half on a long ride .
Now put a yamy gasket and head skimmed, is not mixing with oil , uses a little water , but not enough to make it over heat this much .
Thermostae , doesnt stick , collant or water no difference .
It goes just over half on a long run .But thats loads of air on a long worng.
Just to add to Gadget's post - when you run the engine with the rad cap off, air bubbles in the water indicate a definite head gasket failure (or cracked head aarrgghh). Top the water right up to the brim of the rad and run it up. when ive had a head gasket problem it was one big bubble coming up through every 5 seconds or so.
LouisBoss - sounds like either a partially blocked rad or a water pump problem or a dodgy thermostat. Overheating is nearly always down to poor fluid flow, i.e. the engine is generating heat as it will do but the coolant needs to flow at the full rate through the rad to get rid of it.
