Engine change(DVLA)

Alright all not been here for a while, just a quick question for a new project.

As alot of members change engines alot do you have to tell DVLA?

I might want to put a 2008 dtx engine in a 2006 dtx,i know the engine fits but will i have problems with DVLA as its newer?

Ive read somewhere about new reg for this and ill have to provide loads of paperwork and have checks etc.Just wondered how everyone else gets on.

my old man would grind off the numbers on the 2008 an make a tag out of aluminium and have engraved the 2006 numbers on it and cover the grinded off numbers (could just cover without grindin

That would be the ideal way but im really after someone who has recently done this legally with DVLA.

I want to keep the bike mate, not have it impounded while they dick about waiting for me to prove numbers and reciepts.

Surely you just tell them of the change?
Refill in the logbook saying that the engine number has been changed
I personally have never done it but i really can't see it being any harder then that

This is what i get from directgov site, but it doesnt say if this is also for bikes or changing like for like engines.

Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)

DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

  • a receipt for the replacement engine
  • written evidence from the manufacturer
  • an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
  • written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

Seem alot of messing about to me.

your insurance company would be notified by the dvla and may go up in £££

The engine is the same engine just 2 years newer,no difference in cc.

So im hoping as long as the new engine numbers are legitimate they will issue a new logbook with the new numbers. With a fee probably.

Saying that i had an XR 250, it was imported from Japan and there wasn't any engine numbers on the logbook!! Saying that i couldn't find them on the engine myself.. When it got nicked the insurance paid out like they should, it wasn't even mentioned to be honest..

All you'll need to do is go through the usual tricks with the DVLA, people change engines all the time across the vehicle range, your not doing anything out of the ordinary chap :)

I personally wouldn't tell DVLA, i saw a cpi 50 the other day on ebay with a yz250 engine in and that was still registered as a 50 lmao. Its not like you are putting a bigger engine in or anything, and the police are not going to go checking all the engine numbers! Let's be onist mate your bike doesn't look like a rat that's been though loads of chav's hands on field lmao.biggrinbiggrin

JUST MY OPINION!wink

Ive got a different engine number to my fram number. was told to just tell the dvla and they would change it.... at worst, you would have to go to the local dvla place to prove its still 125 (unlikely). but i havnt done it, the police dont care and neither do the mot people.
