my engine seized couple of weeks ago no idea why but had the barrel honed and new piston and rings etc fitted , anyway ran it up on friday done 38 miles taking my time as new piston etc then all of a sudden a loud ratterling noise and knocking coming from the top end at first i thought the exhaust might of been loose but no.
Same day i took the bike back to shop that rebuilt the topend tried to start it and it wouldnt starter motor was stuck so had to free it off the it went and was quite made me look like a pratt , biut then the loud noise came back the guy in the shop pulled the oil feed pipe off and nothing was coming through at all and had a spilt pipe would this be the cause of the top head been damaged again do you think ? oh and the clutch is sliping now aswell ,
Nightmare but his a question are these bikes really relible??? as since i have this bike its one thing after another but then again 10 owners in 7 years dont sound good but all i have do mainly is fix and hardly anyriding
That sucks dude but once you get all the problems sorted it should be more or less plain sailing. Maybe there's a couple of member local to you that could take a look? I know Bradders is a fścking god with these bikes so i'm currently saving to have him do some work on my bike to get it all shiny and running like a well lubricated demon :P
Might be worth giving him a shout as he could sort it for you :)
To be honest it really depends on how you tune the bike and what you do with it, if they are not properly set up and looked after then they will blow, most people make them premix so that they don't have to rely on the oil being fed into the motor by the stupid pump, as for the new seizure, yeah that's probably the problem, if there is no oil coming through then it will seize, could be what did it the first time, the bike shop should have spotted what caused the seizure though and told you. Most symptoms of 2 stroke engine problems are seen in the piston, if they still have the old piston then get it and take a pic of it and post it on here, do the same with the one that has just blown if it has blown, as for the clutch slipping, it probably just needs tightening, the very first thing that happened to me was clutch slip, that's when I started learning about how to fix bikes, I couldn't afford to pay anyone. I had quite a few problems early on with my dt, I fixed them though and looked for a cause without spending too much money, my bike lasted for another year after that till it got nicked and recovered and then stripped without any problems, if kicks is what you are after then a 2 stroke is for you, if you want reliability get a bicycle lol.
I will give you a warning from my personal experience with bike shops, the day I bought my dt (2nd hand) the bike shop serviced it, put it on the trailer and brought it to my house, they wheeled it off the trailer and started it for a minute seconds to show me that it still worked, well I went for dinner and then my mate came with his dt, I started mine and left it warming up giving it a blip of the throttle every now an then and all of a sudden crunching metal sound and a huge bang. Phoned the guy who had just got back to his house and he came straight back, meanwhile we had been looking at the bike and realised that there was no oil in the gearbox, they had forgotten to put it in when they serviced it, the guy tried to blame me and my mate for it saying that we had been ragging the sh1t out of it and it had blown, we argued for about half an hour and then I told him I was going to call out a mobile mechanic, he then started to change his story and told me he would get it fixed, 3 weeks later bike back with a different motor in it which I know of because I had to sort it on the bikes documents. Moral of the story, most times something breaks a lot is because you are paying someone to fix it, they want you to come back with it broken again, its good business and they will always deny its their fault even if they know its because they are lazy as fek and cant do anything right.
Oil pumps can be a pain in the ar$e and having had a failure on a 4 cylinder RD500 I know it can hurt the wallet. Sh*t happens, as they say and believe me it happens to all of us!
El Gato is spot on and the piston will tell a story about what happened, but the lack of lube is definitely the problem, based on your description.
Its a long process teaching yourself about fixing bikes. Making mistakes will cost you money in the early days but its even worse when a so-called professional mechanic gets it wrong and that costs you money as well!
A 7 year old machine is not going to be as reliable as a new one, no doubt about it. But most jobs on a DT are fairly straight forward and there are links on here to both genuine Yam and Haynes workshop manuals. Use these and beg or borrow the necessary tools. Maintain a clean and organised working area when you are dismantling. I've even laid parts out on old wallpaper and then drawn diagrams and made notes next to where Ive laid out the parts so that it is clear how things should be put back together. Good luck and hope this helps in getting you back up and running again.
iv had **** from my yam dealer aswell i brought a brand spankin new loom for my dt and because i really dont like electrics i thought id get them to fit it coz im a lazy sod somtimes lol, so i pushed my bike to them with no tank seat or plastics so they didnt have to charge to take all that off aswell, and i pulled out the old loom coz it was hacked to shi1 to save time and money, and make it easier for them, well a week later they still haddnt managed to fit the loom they said the techy is having a hard time fitting it, i was like err ok, btw how much is the bill so far? they go 400 quid (inc loom)... i was like wtf! ur charging me 400 quid and the fuker still isnt fitted! wtf u doin to it!? sod it ill take it now n do it myself, all they had done is hang the loom on the frame and plug in a few obvious plugs which a brain dead chimp could of done, so 2 hours later i finished it off with working lights indis horn clocks the lot, so yea iv never taken it back there for anything, iv gotta stop being lazy n do it myself! haha
iv also given up on my oil pump i accidently let the 2t tank run dry (not for long tho got some emergency cheap ass strimmer 2t from bnq lol) wen i got home i cracked out the manual to see wat the deal was, it had to be bled, so i was bleeding this fuker for ages oil was goin every where (good expensive oil) n i was gettin the hump with it so i thought **** it ill pre mix from now on that way i cant forget to put oil in lol plus it puts me at ease wen im on enduros or generally spanking the **** outta it , i know that its getting well lubed ALL the time no mater what it is a bit of a pain in the arse having to take the petrol can with me to the petrol station and carry premix with me on long trips but its worth it imo.
so wat im tryin to say rich if theres nowon on here nearby who can help, give it a go urself m8 urll save so much money, and plus uv got the forum to help out, theres so much info on here and ppl that know wat there doin that will gladly help out as much as possible, u cant fail m8
and sean dont big me up jus yet i havnt worked on ur bike yet lmao!!! na itll be kl m8 ; )
I do my research mate, seen what you've done on other threads, otherwise i wouldn't bother driving it up to you at all it's gonna be like an 80 mile trip :P
(assuming i can't blag the work van again to take it up there so i can just go up the motorways :D )

cheers for advice mate i did do it myself tho i took the engine out etc what happened was the studs had snaped off that hold the barrel on , and i dont have a tool to hone the barrel , or tap the holes where the studs go so motorbike shop drilled and taped bottom end and fitted new bolts honed the barrel and fitted piston kit , i only took it back there because they have only just put it together and am hoping its somethin they have done wrong thats caused it but it just seems one thing after another with this bike , starter was stuck aswell the other day then the guy reckons the clutch slips how he knows that i dont know because all he tried to do is jump it , everyone told me before i got a bike dont get a 2 stroke am starting to know why now i might do premix tho like you said because when your riding you ant got a clue if that pump is working at all its a shame yamaha dont have a warning light to say whether the pump is working or not but all am doing is repairing at hardly any riding not sure whether to fix it and sell it to be honest as i lost confidence in it now as i go green laning on my own alot and i need a realible bike
