Think my bije could do with a ring change as there only seems to be one ring on the piston i see piston kits on ebay ? non genuine will they wear quicker do they still wear the same ?

people used to only put one ring on as some sort of effort to make the bike quiker as it changes the timmings of the ports

on a bike like ours its just not needed

i would buy propper rings for it ,its not just how long they will last but also the machine fit

maybe you could have the bore lightly honed aswell while your in there, and it will help the new rings wear in propperly to the bore and give better compression and more power

the writing always goes on top of the rings and they are different top and bottom rings

hope this helps fella smile

oh right i seem like it lacks power at low revs slugish hence the change alot of people say there dt wheelie and allsorts were mine seems nothing like it could this be due to only having one ring ?

yeah man coz of bad compression

and only one ring can oval the bore

does it drink alot of fuel ???

if not it could be the power valve

when the power valve gets adjusted you should look up the exhaust port to make sure its flush with the top of the port with ignition switched on

dont put your fingers in there till youve turned the ignition switch or you could do yourself some real damage and make sure noone touches the kickstart while you work on it cry

after the new rings are in the head gasket you use should be original yammy or athena(made in the same factory with the same materials)

forgot to mention that our bikes (1990) have a different size bore as standard so make sure the rings are for our yeah or you will have a .4 gap

think ours are 56.4mm

later ones are 56.0mm

probs better to take bore to engineer to have it measured first as it has probs been bored at some point

only if yours has never been bored out to next piston size.

if you have vernia calipers you can measure the piston first then order parts

but yeah 88-90 dtr's hade a slightly bigger piston as standard

if its been bored it should go 56.40,56.65,56.90 etc etc (0.25mm each time)

the newer ones would go 56.00,56.25,56.50,56.75 etc etc

the rings will also do this so be careful when ordering and deffo measure it first smile

yeah man you can get away with it

just a thought coz your in there anyways

check the line where the top ring reaches to in the bore ,if theres a lip its worn

and it could be ovaled ,i personally would take the bore and piston to an engineer before doing anything else they can measure the bore in more directions and tell you if its oval

if its bad you will see blow-by on the piston under the rings (dark combustion marks)

blow-by =low compression ,low power ,harder to start, drinks fuel etc

sound just like the low compression cuz of the low power and the drinking feul part sound like a rebore it is then when rebore would that sort the new piston and rings etc at extra cost ?

no just measure your piston then buy the next size one for your model

give that to the engineer to make the bore the right size

replace small end bearing lube everything as it gets fitted (2-stroke oil)

and replace head gasket with original yammy one (or athena) and you will have a very nice bore

mmmmmm power biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

mmmmmm mpg lol

when you take your piston out clean it up and look on the crown

it should have a number on it this will be the size

if not look inside the piston if it says prox its probs the original one but measure it anyway

when you put the new piston in its got an arrow that has to face the exhaust port hope this helps dude biggrin

ps as soon as the bore is off stuff a clean rag in the opening or you could drop the clips in the bottom end doh leave the cloth in there till the bore is going back on .

yeah that what i meant m8 by offsize piston your year had a slight bigger piston .. but if you buy a piston an take it with you to the cylinder engineers it wont really matter personally with it being 56.4 already id go for a +1 and a rebore
