6V on battery?

Hi all, I'm new here, just bought a DT125R for the winter. I have a small problem, I hope it hasn't been a topic in the past, but I can't find it. I checked the battery and it's dead. I bought a new one but I don't want to install it yet because there's something I don't trust. When I let the engine run, without the battery, I measure 6V instead of 12V on the battery cables. I'm sure the bike produces 12V because the head light and other lights are getting 12V. Hope somebody can help, thanks in advance.

Both, indeed the voltage increased when loading (headlights) up to 8V. So I installed a brand new battery, everything's working fine now. But how can I check if the bettery is charging, because of course I meassure 12 to 13V now but that's maybe only from the battery?
By the way, I like what you did on your bike.

thanks m8, time will tell but you could do a heavy discharge and then ride it for a long time and see it the voltage comes back up
