Removing races from headstock!!!

Hi guys Been in the garage sweating trying to get the races out of the headstock... I've manage to get one out but the other one seems as if it's the wrong one and is stuck... Are there any method of getting them out apart from a hammer and chisel from the opposite end?? The only other way I can think of is using a dremel and make 2 cuts, one either side...

if its realy realy stuck and you have no option

then heat is your friend but you would have to touch up the paint after

just get a gas torch like what a plumber uses and heat up the outside very slowly then tap the bearing from other end like you have been

if you tap one side only it will twist in its hole and become stuck if this happens you will have to tap it in again and start over

tap it round the edges in a criss cross patten and it should come out strait

you can do this to put new ones in aswell

make sure you use tapperd headrace bearings not the standard race and ball type

hope this helps dude smile

Cheers gadget!!!

I've just spoken to the local bike workshop and he's said to either weld a bolt on the races and the wack it from the other side or to use Liquid Nitrogen they use Wurth Rostoff which should freeze it just enough to get out!!!

I will Use all options though!!!

For stuff like that coastie, I try and spray liberal amounts of some sort of release oil,wd40, plus gas, or whatever your choice, leave for a while, the try drifting out not with a chisel mind but a round tapered flat ended drift(like a pencil with the end broken off), an old car/lorry push rod ground to a taper, then squared off at the end helps, if you can't get a proper drift. a couple of taps at 12, 3,6, and 9 o'clock helps, failing that get a plumbers blow torch give it some gentle heat and try again, again failing that I try freeze shocking it out with halfords freeze spray, again after some gentle heat.
Not nessesssarily the best way but an alternative, that works for me anyroad.

Thanks nev

I've tried wd40, carb cleaner, and engine degreaser and not working.. I would say its the wrong one I'm there really!!

I will try the blow torch option as it doesn't matter if I damage the paint as its being blasted and coated at some point soon!!!

Thanks for the input guys!

I just removed the head race from my frame today, it took a while but wd40, blow torch, and extension bar did it for me. Had to get it smoking hot, lol

Well after spending 2 hours with a hammer, grinder, old long screw driver, a blow torch and WD40 I manage to remove it at last....

Oh by the way of people didn't know WD40 is very flammable!!!!!!!!

I used an old long screwdriver, bent it, grinded the blade down and where the screw driver bent so it fit snugly in the headstock!!

It was a pig of a job!!!
