neutral and running issues

ok, I did post in the old newbie section about my bike but it's gone so.......

1991 dtr, fully derestricted with 8k on the clock. Runs ok but smokes badly over 40mph, can't get neutral unless you turn the engine off, max I've had is 60mph going downhill (ok so I'm no slim Jim at 14st but it's still rubbish).

I'm hopefully buying a second hand engine off eBay to strip down and look at how it works and how it goes together but here's my question.

Is it hard to work on these engines or is it easier to just send it off to somewhere like pjme and leave it to the experts?

I'm mechanically minded as I repair photocopiers, printers etc for a living so taking stuff apart doesn't faze me but is it worth it.

there simple mate
sounds like you may have a worn out gear box or some parts at least
u need to get in ther and have a look really
check the selector forks for wear and other parts of the shift mechanism
id never pay some one else to do some thing if you can get away with it thats my theory any way lol
that will be a really good idea doing that with an old engine mate that's the way i learned to do them
best thing to do is to get stuck in
should be doing more than 60 tho
whats the top end compression like, could be a worn out, under powered top end letting the engine down

smoking is more than likely badly adjusted auto lube system or the crank seal is blown sucking in tranny oil and burnin it, is the tranny oil getting low with no sign of a leak ???

cheers for the reply. There is a small leak only when its on its side stand so 99% of the time its on my lift up stand. The bike was stood for 16 years (last tax disc was 1995) prior to me so Im suspecting the seals are going to need replacing. I cant do anything at the moment with it as it as due the mot in a month so its needs to be running for that.

Ive got my eye on a complete engine so if i get it at the right price then i'll do the work myself as i have something to work from plus ive checked out your guide which is very good and stoppes you going in blind.

2 things though, 1st is when you get the chance do the other step by step guide for the bottom end strip down and 2nd if I need help (ha ha im being optomistic), is it ok to bug you as i might as ask stupid questions which you might think WTF?

cheers
paul
