The rebuild... The Supermoto 4T conversion...

After buying a DTR with a 'freshly rebuilt' engine a few weeks back I soon found out it had actually had a half arsed rebuild... which I discovered when stripping it apart after it seized on me!

How it looked...

Not one to do things by halfs I decided to completly rebuild the bike from the ground up even though I originaly purchased the bike to save money!?

So the stripping began only discover more bodges. How it stood after 2 hours work and an hour of cleaning my garage out before hand. Got lowz?

Big pile of bits, note all the bits in labled bags ;)

Dead

My 17" rim to be laced to the TDR hub

Frame, swing arm and brakets will be blasted some time in the next week or so. I have decided to paint them and not powdered coat them as its cheaper and if it gets chipped I can touch it up... plus I have all the gear and the space to paint. Colour scheme is top secret atm... but the yokes will be re anodized in gold ;)

Its a 50ltr, think its about 14cfm but ive had it for years, its ok, wouldnt be very good for air tools tbh. it doesnt cope too well with a spray gun.

Not much of an update but an update none the less.

Frame stripped and ready for blasting, taking the bottom yoke into work tomorrow to press the stem out too.

Also, how do you remove the headstock bearings? a big hammer? press?

I pressed the stem out to make it easier to blast and paint, was only a 30 second job. Just dropped all the parts off this afternoon with the blasters. £45 for all you see including etching the steel parts.

Made a new chain roller at work this afternoon, working on the other one on Monday. Still waiting on the frame/parts coming back so stripped the forks and trim the mud guard brackets off them.

Been busy moving house and have only just got a shed so I can resume work on the DT, bit of a down grade from the garage but hey ho.
Got all the parts back from the blasters, they've been given a coat of black etch too all for £45! bargin. Ive also got myself a new front mud guard and a HP rear one. Will be painting the frame metalic silver as soon as I move the rest of my tools. Havnt even started on the engine!

New tyres, headstock bearings, suspension linkage bearings, swing arm bearings, custom made crash bobbins and modified front spindle, refurbished front fork parts. Also welded on the bracket to one of the chain rollers too.

Its got TDR forks and front wheel with 320mm disk and brembo caliper, rear wheel is a straight swap iirc. What size tyres are you wanting to run and on what width rim? my front is a 120/60/17 on a 3.25.

Just looked at your project thread, those sm wheel will be fine, you just wont be able to run some girth of the back safely. Tbh, 160 on a 125 is over kill and it wont stear as well as a 130 or 140 but it will look cool as ****!

Looking good! Could you post up some more pics of the rear fender in place? I bought a brand new standard one but when i went on my little trip it got worn by my bag bungeed to it for 7 days. Thinking maybe one of those YZ style ones.

Cheers. Rear fenders only held in place by the seat for now. I'll be shaving the seat down to follow the contour of the fender, i'll still be using the grab handle too.

What size is your rear rim to get a 160 on it?

After placing the rear sumo wheel I have up against the wheel I have on the back atm, it's the same size so I'm thinking could I not just switch the sumo tyre onto my current rear wheel which has the knobbly on it? I'll be wasting my time changing the wheels over when their the same size? the front I have is 2.5 17" though so that'll need changing. Are the TDR wheels a straight fit? It's gonna look brand new when you're done! :)

Yeah, I mean the 130 is more than enough. I don't know how big you can go on a 3.5j rim.. maybe 140 is pushing it if 160 is pushing it on a 4.25j. We'll see, I'll see how it fairs on the 3.5j 130 first. I've got 2.5j 110 on the front at the moment. Should be all good :) I can experiement with sizes when I've actually got them fitted ;)

Looking forward to seeing this project all together Nath, btw is that as true gunmetal/graphite grey as it comes over in the pic? as I'm toying with the idea of getting my next frame done that colour, to be going with red and silver/grey I reckon.

Keep getting this colour scheme in my head, less orange mind and more red.

Cheers, no the frames just a satin black colour from the etch primer but it will be staying that colour once I get round to painting it. It does look slightly gun metal in the photos tho but im thinking of going silver with the yokes, forks and swing arm and then gunmetal with the engine. Liking that colour scheme!... im not that adventures.
