Right im planning to spray all of my RE panels black again and make them look as new as they can through sanding and what not

You may be asking why bother when you can get new panels and a new sticker set, answer is i just love the variation of graphics on my bike and to save money for my bike test and not have the risk of damaging new panels as soon as i buy them, then this is why :D but if it looks poor ill buy some new and either try getting some of the same or some DD graphics (will deffo be asking them to change the monster logos if i do ;)

Anyway heres a picture of the panels sticker masked up, im gonna do one for the minute and see how it comes out, ill update in this post

maskeed.jpg

First got a couple of questions regarding prepping and spraying the panel/s

So im looking to get the majority of scratches on the panel/s out before spraying, what would you all reccomend, see the scratches arnt too deep but when up close theres quite a lot of them, wet and dry?? start rougher then go smoother i guess right??

Then primer, what primer would you lot reccomend?? links if possible or places to get it from, and how easy is it to apply with no experience of using rattle cans?? how many layers before the actual paint??

2ndly what paint would you reccomend, as said before im looking to go black again so it looks nice and new, links or names of products would be great

3rdly how easy would you say it would be to spray the paint my self, being my 1st time?? is it quite easy or should i leave the spraying to my mate who does quite a lot, but then less on the dt this month as ill have give him a bit of money to do it ;) maybe can anyone give instructions of how to spray them, like i know they gotta be in a dust free environment, but thats about it ;) lol or even any vids which youv'e used yourself to get the job done

Please get back to me, much appreciated

Cheers,

Jordan :)

it wont look very good with can spray paint, the laquer always looks crap and it soluble to fuel,

if you do get them done pro, make sure its got the laquer over the decals aswel, like the tanks is

halfords paints, will make it look worse, i have done door mouldings on my 206

looks good from a distance

see in the pic the side door mouldings are sprayed. properly sanded and wet dryed , primed then wet dryed lightly then multiple layers of base paint then the laquer,

sprayed in a hot room and dust free

looks good but hasn;t got the shine, the can laquers are crap. give no depth or shine

it has stayed on 18 months 13022012237.jpg

its such a small amount you want to spray , why not vinyl wrap it in gloss black?

I know paying a pro would be better but it would be for effective just to buy some new panels and stickers, the stickers arnt in proper mint condition so it would be pointless to pay that much, good idea tho, cheers mate

havnt thought of vinyl wrapping it, how easy do you think it would be to apply to all panels excluding the areas of the graphics?? im up for that depending on how hard it is to do??

And MDK thats really useful, thanks bud, if i dont vinyl wrap it ill be prepping them that way :)

If i was to spray can any of you reccomend some paints and primers then??

Cheers

vinyl wraping is ok but bloody hard and a lot can go wrong ..

as for spary you will be tempted to buy budget cheap paints such as pound lands ? yeah bargain £1 a can but poor water none rust retardent paint that and very little in each can also the nozzles are ****e .

2 or 3 good sized cans of good £10 spray and primer can do a great job the key is in the prep spray sand spray sand spray sand till you get it just right leave time between each coat ect as in the link above...if your gona do it do it right ..

also in a good dust free dry room or shed . its tempting to do out doors ect with fine weather but sods law a pesky green fie or bug will come from miles away just to ruin your hard work .

think im gonna leave the idea of wrapping it and paint it instead :) and they ruined that BMW with that vinyl wrap lol, and yeah mate, thanks for that :)
got some more questions tho ;)

Went and saw my mate who's pretty good at spraying and he said to get this to do the whole bike, what do you think, too much, too little, just right?? :

Primer - 4 -5 cans of Plasti kote, looked at B&Q and there wanting around £7 each can

Gloss black - 3 - 4 cans of Plasti kote, once again B&Q are wanting around £7 each can

Clear lacquer - 2 -3 cans of plasti kote

and only use 400 grit and 1200 sandpaper

??? opinions

from ruffly totaling that up that's gonna cost a fair bit, how much would it cost normally to get a company to spray them including with all the costs of the paint, if i was to do the sanding beforehand??

see each new panel is around £30 each, i don't mind spending that much on paint if its gonna look good tho

seriously , i was at a spray shop earlier talking to a painter, he had a car in with  a "can" sprayed spoiler, the reason the can laquers are rubbish is that the pressure is to low and spray to thick

a single drop of brake fluid or petrol will melt the paint, i know because i have been there done that,

they will never get that shine you want

probaly be more shiny using enamal gloss black on top of primer,

hmm i know what you mean mate, I'm contemplating just to buy some new panels or like you recommended get them done by a pro, how much mate does it roughly cost to get the panels sprayed then by a company???

and about the enamel is that spray or brush paint, only heard of plasti kote black gloss enamel and it comes in a tub which you use a brush with??

yeah been using back to black t-cut, comes out pretty well but ill give that a try as well cheers :)

With the plasti kote enamel i heard painting it with a paintbrush it doesn't leave any brush strokes, is that the case the only way??

Also Ive got a bit of a problem now;

Being on a proper hangover when i sanded one panel down i went a little mad thinking there was a layer of paint already on the panel and i needed to get it off before priming like that website shows, but i soon realized after doing it hasn't got any paint on the panel at all lol, ah well... anyway here it is now:Photo 0126.jpg

Photo 0125.jpg

Im thinking now just to leave the paint colour as it is as thinking about it its probably best to keep the money for lessons and tbf the panels arnt that bad and like you say theres products which can polish them nicely, so yeah now i have a temporarily ruined panel, what should i do???

I either need to get it back to how it was originally, this ideally would be my 1st option but how can i get a closest match of colour to all the other panels which i wont be painting

secondly i could spray both this and the other front fender for the time being with plasti-kote and hopefully it looks near enough the same as the others

thirdly mask up all the panels and get them all sprayed by my mate with cans, will cost around £80 including all of the paint required, but how much would it cost normally for a company to spray them, see thats my most important question, see can you make the panels look like a showroom finish through spraying or should i

just buy a whole new set of panels, setting me back £200 + and ill have to wait another month before doing my bike lessons and wont have any graphics for the time being,

hmm, your reccomendations would be appreciated, as im stumped lol, i dont even want to ride around with that panel now, looks so bad, i knew i should of waited lol

cheers guys

the only way is YAMAHA DTR wrote:

there are many ways to get them shiney again, search youtube

you will need to work down to the finest wet and drry before tcuting and polishing

some people use a blow torch to remove stress marks, i did find it worked but using it on the inside of the pannel, i had to polish them after to shine them up

no amount of sanding will get that shine back ..even the scraping leaves them dull . the use of heat can help but never 100%

if I was you I would primer them and sand as stated above then have a go spraying them dont try and rush the spray job light coats with time to dry between and you will get a good finish if you buy a good high gloss paint

ok after my mates dad not letting him spray the panels its all up to me to sort them out ;) as you know its my first time, which one would you follow, stick with the first link which MDK supplied or the second, and any adjustments if so, the second link sounds easier and more promising, your opinions are needed :) lol
