My 1998 DT125R 4BL Project
Permalink

So after helping a friend buy a DT125R to commute on I got the bug again and decided I needed another DT125. I had an RE from 17-21 and sold it once I passed my DAS and got the RD350. I decided I was going to build one from the ground up and set about buying parts on ebay and gumtree. I found a job lot of parts in Scotland and ended up getting the lot shipped down on a Pallet at a cost of 90 quid for the deilvery.

I started buying up loads of other parts and found a frame, also in Scotland for sale which the seller claimed had a V5. I paid him the money and he then said he couldnt find the V5. I decided to take th frame anyway and apply for a new logbook.

I had pretty much enough to build a bike when I saw on ebay a DT125R 1998 advertised as a non runner in Crawley (not far from me). I spoke to the guy and he seemed to think that the "reeds were blocked" as it was sucking and not blowing? I duno, but I haggled with him and he said I could take it for 250 quid. He only had the new keeper slip but all seemed kosher and so i took it.

It appeared that it had just been a bit neglected and needed some cleaning and TLC

However as the bike came apart it became apparent that there was more work to do than I had first thought.

The brake calipers were all siezed up and both needed an overhaul, the back wasnt so bad but the front had had fork oil leaking into it for sometime. I stripped them down..

Yep, that means the forks were leaking too.

I decided to have the top end off and see what it was like..

The barrel needed a re bore and new piston kit so that was done.

I used a set of forks I had from my spares and stripped them down and re painted the fork legs. I have the seals and oil ready and still need to get around to re building them. I also still need to finish the calipers. I have bought a blue front braided brake hose to go back on. I've also got a 3MB exhaust ready to go on that has been de restricted. I bought a DEP silencer to go on. The plastics were in a sorry state but thats not a problem as I had already ordered this lot to go on when the bike is mechanically sound.

I couldnt get a new headlight surround so sprayed up and stickered a spare.

I'm now getting tired so will add more info later, for now i'll just chuck a load of photos up and let them do the talking:

The blue paint for the headlight surround? If so it's halfords colour match. I will say that as good as it looks, the colour isnt a complete match with the plastics and the surround is slightly darker than them but I'm sure it won't be hugely noticable on the bike. I took the plastics in and used their colour chart to match up closest blue. They have a page of Yamaha blues.

A bit of an update. I'll write a bit about the photos this time. The bike is now mechanically sorted.

I had the powervalve out and dremmeled it back and re fitted.

I finished my fork rebuild, the first one I have done and hope it has all gone back togethr correctly. It feels good and appears to be holding the oil so i guess time will tell!

I rebuilt both calipers with new pistons and seals in both. When undoing the rear bleed nipple it snapped off and I thought "bugger". There was lots of swearing whilst i wondered what i could do now as I couldnt exaclty drill it out as loads of it would end up in the bore of the caliper. I thought, "those chaps on the forum will know" and low and behold supersteve and towiyd pointed my in the direction of a banjo bolt with bleed nipple built in. I ordered 2 up just incase and they arrived and did the job perfectly.

I continued bleedinging the brakes having never done it before. I found an effect method of drawing the fluid through the system using tube and a syrine attached to the bleed nipple. Then once the fluid was all the way down i used a one man bleed kit to bleed the air. The brakes are feeling fantastic!

The speedo drive cable was broken as the threaded collar that screws onto the rear of the clocks had come away and so I picked up a new speedo cable from Wemoto for 10 quid. When I had the front wheel out changing the forks I also put in the better condition wheel I had from the set in the previous photos.

I have run the bike and ridden it around out the front on my house. It seemed to be getting quite warm to the touch but the temperature gauage didnt show it getting too hot. It was going up but didnt get very far. Maybe I'm just being a bikerchondriac? It rode very nicely but i could hear a strange whining/hissing sound which i will investiage. I only have water in there at the moment so will need to change over for a proper coolant.

I order a Motrax Speedo converter that fits to the rear of the clocks between them and the speedo cable to convert from kph to mph and will remove the stickers from the clock face at some point.

I've put the DEP pipe back on for now until I can sort my 3MB pipe out. Someone has monkied the bolt holding the hear guard on and I'm struggling to remove it whilst trying not to damage the exhaust.

Once that is sorted I will be stripped it back and re painting it with plasti-kote as it seems to have good reviews from ppl on here. The dep had a hole in the pipe and ihave repaired using set hard metal style putty that you rub together and it sets solid. It appears to have done a very good job but i still want the standard 3mb pipe on for the better low rev range power. I don't want the high rpm power delivery that the DEP produces according to reviews.

My plastics are all still sitting around waiting to go on. I keep looking at the stickers and wanting to apply them but I'm worried ill mess them up and want to wait until i have plent of time so i dont rush.

The petrol tank is still in the same condition of half stripped. Again i keep thinking i need to sort that out but i wanted to get the bike mechanically sound first and have it as a finishing touch.

The tank graphics are making progress too. My cousin managed to design them well using what i assume was photoshop and I now have the files ready to take to a printing place and get some stickers made up. Then once the tank has been primed and sprayed blue i will apply followed by many coats of petrol resistant lacquer.

Now to the bit im stuck with. ELECTRICS. I don't know what it is but I just cant do them. I havnt done too badly with this one and the brake lights work, the servo obvisouly is working, the ignition is working. The kill switch is working but the indicators and headlight im struggling with. The indicators are all plugged in but seem to be flashing very very slowly. Will this mean a new relay is needed?

The headlight that was on the bike was a polisport and it looks like the wiring has been adapted to suit that. If anyone could shed some light on the headlight wiring it would be greatly appreciated. The photos show what I'm left with. I ordered a new headlight unit from YamBits but i think it is slighlty different to an original. I only had a headlight unit and not the wiring/bulb connectors and the new one from yambits was only 26 quid delivered.

if you do the tank with cans it will just melt because of fuel fumes or drops, just a heads up

and spraycan laquer isn't shiny

I'll be using a petrol resistant lacquer. Have you tried and failed? I've had good results using spray cans before providing you prep well and take care and time. I'm going to give it ago as I can't afford to take it to get it done professionally. Also just because I want to try.

I'm pretty confident it will be good and work well, if it doesnt then I'll keep looking for a good condition tank on ebay.

If it doesnt work out Andy, as rattle can spray didn't for me on the tank, have a look at using Two Pack paint, very resistant to petrol. To be fair I first used a normal lacquer, but didn't need a lacquer coat with the Two Pack stuff.

or get it powdercoated blue and put the decals on, powdercoatings cheapish

you dont need metalic because nothing else is on the bike

Did yours not work out just because of the lacquer/petrol issue Nev or was it the paint? hmm yeah powedercoating is a thought. I want to lacquer over the stickers because i don't know how good the stickers will be at wear and tear from weather.

The whole front of the tank, from the cap on, was back to metal, due to the full tank seeping out, I don't know how long he'd had the rear end of the tank lifted up, but lacquer and gloss had totally washed away, luckily he felt guilty about it, so I got another tank and wirebrushed the paint off, and he got his lad to spray with the Two Pack paint, for nowt. and as pic underneath shows its a good'un.

Ok so I havnt had the time to post things up on here as I had a trip planned from the 1st-9th Sept to ride around the UK on 125's. Suddenly realised there was about a week to go and so went hammer and tongs to get the DT sorted.

I got 2 brand new front indicators from Wemoto at 10.40 each which is think is bloody good! I finally realised that the lights wouldnt work without the engine running and so managed to wire them up. Got everything ready for the MOT and took it down on the wednesday. I chucked on some old black plastics for the mot as it was a rush.

It failed it's mot on the number plate being too small. Hadnt even thought about that...and the lower suspensions linkage had play in it. So that night i went home and started stripping.

Luckily I had a complete suspension link that I had bought on ebay for the next project, so just swapped the entire linkage. All the play gone and the next morning I got a number plated for 8 quid from a local car spares place. halfords wanted 16 and didnt even have the stuff in to make one!!

I changed over the plastics for my new blue ones from portugal but didnt put stickers on and the Tank had to stay as I havnt got round to spraying the tank yet. It's in the garage now with paint stripper on.

It was ready for it's trip, which turned out to be 2050 miles.

We went from Worthing down to lands end, then up to john O'groats, then back to worthing. It was an adventure to say the least but the bike was incredible. The only issues came in the form of the speedo stopping working about 40 miles in. It turned out it was the converter gearbox i had bought as the clocks are in kph. I have just emailed asking for a replacement.

Here are a few photos from the trip.

My next step is to spray the tank, spray up the flywheel cover, paint the exhaust back to black, apply the stickers and then it will be up for sale to fund the DT200WR project and get that finished!

We bought it the night before leaving from tescos. 20 quid i think it was. We only used it once. The rest of the time we stayed in hostels. Was just as cheap really as camp sites.

They are some cheap ones. something like XuanYuan. I'll have a proper look later but I'm pretty sure they are these.

Lands end was our first day. 292 miles down to lands ends from here, then 30 miles back up the A30 to Redruth for our first nights stop.

I remember riding to Fowey in cornwall on my first DT125RE and thinking "never again"!
