When sealing the crankcase back up is it ok to run a thin bead of silicone round the flat, thin harder gasket? Or do you have to buy a special rubbery one?

I bought 3 bond gasket sealant off eBay, it cost me about 10-12 quid, the trouble with silicone is its rubbery and could perish under heat...

If you mean the centre cases there is no gasket that goes in there, you should use propper case sealant as above, you will get loads more than one engine outta one tube and it's good for all sorts of jobs ,don't skip this sealer or you'll regret it

iv used that for years

make shure the surfaces are clean dry/oil free

make sure every fins good b4 u go to seal the cases or ull have to clean it all off and do it again

u only need a smear on each surface not a great slug allway round like most people do smile
