Light blue 1989 dtr125 project

Hi guys, so ive given my self a lot of work to spread over some time! I originaly had my underpowered 1990 dtr that had a later 3bn engine as the original engine was stolen. I was really bothered by the engine being slow and not being the classic original that came with the bike!

Soooo after joining the site i got more and more into spending hours and hours mucking around and tweaking the bike in the garage and coming on the site picking up tips, looking at other peoples bikes and parts. Much to my girlfriends annoyence! ha

Last week i saw Reef put this dtr in somerset up on items spotted, sounded good and my other bike was in bits in the garage trying to diagnose the lack of power. I had a day off, had just been paid and own a big van! So off i went on a 320 mile round trip to pick the old girl up. smile After a few hours of driving i realised i was no where even near half way and started to wonder what the fook i was doing. ha

So here it is when i bought it:

The engine was nice and quick, still restricted with the pv too! So me and another member Carlos Rex took the engine out and put it in my other bike that wasnt in AS much of a state! Been driving the my badly sprayed black bike (not me) with the nice mb engine in to london and seems great. Fairly soon i will completely strip the 1989 blue bike down buff all the rust off "advice needed" then start from the begining wih a fresh powdercoat.

More pictures will follow.

yeah if you paint those blue tank or panels I will cry..........................  if I was you I would have them streight on the black dtr .the blue is super lush .

as for the rust in tank take the tap of and fill with knutts and bols and  again give it a good rattle. I also put a water jet washer inside mine and gave it a good blast realy got it clean then swill  out till every last bit of dust or rust is out  .. and dry the inside asap ..... I first tied a bit of string to a old towel and  pushed that inside  shaking it again to mop up any water then removed and used a hot air gun or hair dryer till was totaly dry ... refit tap and cap filed with fuel and  the tank was fine

Ha ha
Calm down! Calm down! I'm keeping it all original of course, apart from exhaust and a couple of replaceable bits that I can swap back! Ive only taken the engine out so I can start from ground up, to bring her to her former glory! Yes that's s good idea about the bolts, my mum went nuts when she heard all this banging in the tumble dryer. ;)
Got a few rusty bits on outside of tank which is quite hassle!
Also need something to bring out the fade on some of the blue panels.

I'll pop round soon Dom and we'll sort all the panels etc out, you need to keep those original handgaurds too, they give it some character ha!

 Get yourself some of this-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140426948733?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

pour it in to the tank and top up with 4-6 litres of boiling water. leave it for a few hours and swill it around every so often. When the rust is gone, rinse with water, drain and then pour in a little methylated spirits and do the same. Fill with petrol and job done! It works a treat (did my tank today and it looks like new inside, which is pretty amazing as it was a right state!)

Hi guys, after a absolute age I'm going to start putting my baby blue 89dtr back together!

I did buy that acid stuff thanks Zoonankski havnt tested it out yet though.

Frames been powder coated, tank resprayed, top end rebored .25 with a new piston.
Need to get on with the bottom end!
Got stuck about a year ago when my hand made clutch holding tool bent, broke the clutch basket and then sent the clutch plates all over the place!!!
Just about to buy a proper clutch/magneto holding tool and thought i would ask if you guys think some of the other tools are essential with a engine rebuild like the fly w puller and more importantly the crankshaft puller which is pretty expensive!

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like u had a right mare m8 lol
An electric impact gun (or air powered if u have a compressor) would make life so much easyer aswell. Expensive but saves alot of time and effort rtying to undo nuts on the end of shafts holding gears ect. Saves on breaking things like clutch baskets too lol!
Glad to hear your back on the build m8y keep it up!

Cheers bradders, yes the summer is soon aproaching and i cant let another one go by without cruising on my dt!
yea got a 18v impact gun cos im a chippy, the tool is well handy. So you reckon you can get by without the crackshaft puller that they sell on yambits saying its essential?
Im def buying the clutch/magneto holder just to save breaking more ****.

Yea a puller will defo help out alot. But u shouldnt need a flywheel holding tool if u got an impact gun.. jus hold it by hand and whip the nut off with the gun ; )
