Hi everyone I finally got round to getting my dt in for it's MOT an oh my god am I annoyed!! the guy who I bought it off is just an pr!ck an I would quite happily kick him in the crown jewels!! first things first both my tyres ain't legal! secondly all the electrics need re wiring on the front! then to top it all off some d!ck who done the front end on it with the WR forks couldn't of done a worse job!! all the bearing are wrong an completely gooesd!! he's used bearings upside down as spacers! he's just threw what ever he could on it to make it fit an gone yeah that'll do!! so now I'm look at a pricy bill to get it all re done, any idea how much it might cost me

Pick up some used tyres from a breakers or sumit. Could be like £50 for the pair. If needs be i've got a spare DT125 Yokes and forks I can sell so you could just restore it back to a DT. Or just use the original DT forks for the MOT and then revert back to the USD's.
I really don't wanna trust me self with it pal! I just hope when the guy in the shop has a proper look at it, it's not a pile of dog sh!t!! rather just get him to do it an everything else! oh yeah forgot it needs a new chain an sprocket it as well -.-

Yeah well he'll just charge you over the odds with it then. Expect a hefty bill. But put it this way, at least it's all done professionally and once it's done you know it'll pass next time.
there are some prize knobs out there fella can you put some pics up of the spacer/bearing thing and let us see what were dealing with? if he hasn't had the front end put on properly it'll most likely need an engineers attention... part worn tyres will get you through the mot ooh some pics of the wiring too please, sure we can guide you through it
As nev says make sure he quotes you first and itemises it. Then post it up here and we can all throw a glance and see how reasonable it is. If I were in your position and didn't have the expertise I would revert back to origin for the time being and build up some more technical knowledge and experience before going down the modded bike route.
A set of tyres new is 70 quid in eBay. Buy new tubes too from WeMoto or similar as you are likely to puncture the old ones.
Chain and sprockets will be around 40-50.
A replacement set of Dtr forks and yokes are easy to find on eBay or from someone on here.
Then get a Haynes manual and work through it. You'll get to know the bike and build some experience.
Your other option is to bite the bullet and pay for the garage to do the work. Remember you'll be paying 30 quid an hour for as long as it takes to fix id guess.
This is motorcycling but don't let it put you off.
then do the essential work and the less important stuff down the line. If an mot guy finds loads of stuff to fail you on...then thats loads of stuff he can charge you to repair!! Do some research and find a 'good' mot'er.
Doesn't sound that bad tbh, think that's how everyone's fitted those usd forks anyway, sure I remember someone off here saying they used the inner part of a bearing as a spacer. Then just change the bearings for ones that fit. And what do you mean the tyres aren't legal, they off road one's? Again I'm sure most people use off road ones, rub off not for highway use ;) And what's up with the wiring? It's all pretty simple, sure someone can walk you through what needs doing :)
What you have to remember is that someone who has a license to MOT has to follow the rules. If they don't, they lose their job and thats their livelyhood. Say he was to ride away with an mot certificate on a bike with exessive play in the headstock bearings, non legal tyres and faulty wiring. The police pull him on his way home for whatever reason. Thats the MOT guys job gone.
It's up to everyone on the road to make sure their bikes are safe and legal to ride and the MOT is a fall back because there are a lot of people who don't check.
Personally, when i buy a bike I do a ful check on it with things like headstock bearings, shock linkage etc etc. That way I know what I'm buying, its the only way as you should never trust a seller. I'm not having a pop at Liam as everyone has to learn somehow and im sure now he'll check a bike over fully himself before buying it. All the tests an MOT guy can do, you can do yourself or atleast with 1 other person max. Besides a brake strength test and headlight direction.
If tyres say "not for road use" or are below the legal limit then its for a good reason, they arent safe for road use. Would you wanna be riding on tyres that had been specifically deemed unfit for the road? I know I wouldnt.
If there is play in the headstock, its going to rattle around and get worse until something gives. hopefully not at 60-70mph but it could happen.
If the wiring is faulty and your headlight/indicators stop working when your miles from home in the pitch black would you wanna ride down a road. Alot of car drivers don't see us as we are in the broad daylight.
As i said before, it sucks that you're gonna have to put more money into the bike than you first thought but It looks like a nice bike and even if you spend another 300-400 getting it sorted (as callum said) you'll have a DT on the road and they are going up in price as we speak. BY the time you come to sell it, you'll get what its cost you and all the time of riding. It'll all be worth it in the end!
Yea i wasnt suggesting riding an unsafe bike...I would just be interested in what another mot would come up with!
+1 on it being pricey at an mot place...I certainly think it would be worth going to a general garage and just ask them what they think...dont tell them anything you have been told and see if the same things crop up and how their price matches the mot guys!
Having just spent a bit to get my bike back on the road (and a fair amount of time)...new tyres, brake pads, chain + sprockets, re-bore and piston, stainless bolts, fresh trans oil, new coolant, clutch cable, grips, plastics, levers, headlight cowl fix, new bulbs, new zaust....and some other bits im sure....the feeling when its all done and riding a crisp bike is immense and so worth it!
Hey guys sorry for the late reply been working all weekend (sooo tired!!) I can see where you are all.coming from the bikes now gone to a different garage which is like aladins cave he just has bits of bikes everywhere! So.just waiting for a quote of him, as to someones queation about checking the bearings when i bought it yeah i did find a bit of play in it but wasn't much bothered as a set of bearing wouldn't be that much an the reason i won't take it.my self is i don't wanna risk it really chaps i know the basics but wouldn't wanna risk it on something i'm gonna be riding up to 70mph on tarmac haha, thanks for all the advise lads will keep yers informed!

I know it's probably easier said than done for most people but just sort it out yourself, even if you have no mechanical knowledge it's a brilliant learning curve and seriously fun, although you have the odd moments where you disagree
You will be so much more satisfied afterwards and save A LOT
Some things fair enough if you aren't confident but garages make most of their income from trivial jobs that take 10 minutes
Get a manual for definate, then when laddo at the garage tells you what needs doing, look it up in the manual and see how difficult you think it is, most jobs can be done by using the manual for reference, and with all the money you save, you can spend it on the bike but in other ways, la-di-da helmets, aftermarket exhausts, or plastics,or decals , and most importantly it can get a fookin ALARM!!!!!

Haha oh god the whole alarm stuff!! after everything tells me about they all just go at the end of it "you've made the biggest mistake ever you have a dt!" amount off people who I've asked about them such as my dad, people in work, an just other general riders who I know who have owned them, main thing I ask is how do they handle on the road an how reliable are they? 5 outta 10 people say "f.u.c.k knows never had it long enough to find out really" haha mine should be pretty safe kept snug in the hallway with a blanket on and a bar through the back tyre tho shouldn't it? haha

I'd guess in your house is the safest place for anyone to keep a bike.. You wanna ask some lads on here where mine is keped mate.. down a side walk to my flat above the nice long row of shops!!! Pluss my flat is the last and farest one away from my bike.. what with chavs everywhere. but chained up to steel beams next to the stairs as thats how i get up to my flat.. believe me mate.. you bike is as safe as..
In the house is a winrar. MInes chained to my porch with an alarm, immobiliser and secret switch...still not happy lol. Won't fit through my front door with the renthals on lol...
Haha my Crf is kept behind the couch a long with me nephews cobra 50 an bro's pw80!! right guys anyway need some advise here before I loose the will to live!! just came back from the other garage where my DT is an he's just quoted me £800!!!! I nearly fainted!!! but this is what he's saying it needs. Front forks, new front wheel complete with disk, front an rear tyres, chain and sprocket, headlight and cowl, speedo cable, battery, handle bars, grips and a front brake lever! Now before I get shouted at the bike is not getting any work done there! haha but my main concerns are the forks the guy is telling me I can't have them on there! I was trying to get it across to him that there is god knows how many dt's out there with USD conversion! so with that gonna have to find a garage were the guy will know that the forks are okay for the road! even tho I know that it does need bearing and doing right but I know that they are okay for the road once fixed! secondly front wheel and disk! okay what the f.u.c.k I can not see anything wrong with the one that's on it now! also Battery never knew it had but oh well! and finally to close this rant my handle bars! I can not see anything wrong with them at all! I must have the worse luck in history at the moment! some advise please!!! before I burn this dt an end up on a 50cc 4 stroke ped!!
