DT 125 2005 x Engine problem (failure)

Hi. Today my bike broke down. Lost all power at slow speed and I heard a kind of clunking and it cut out, had to get recovered by thee AA. The bike still turns over but has no hope in starting. I can also push it forward in gear. When I was trying to start it earlier it was almost like a build up of preasure came hissing out the exhaust? when I was trying to get it to start.

Thanks in advance

Yeah it is very badly scored and the piston rings are smooth.

Thanks mate. I take it my scored piston and no rings would explain me breaking down and not getting it started again? even though I had a good spark ect? My plans were to get a quality piston as I plan on keeping the bike for a while.

I live in Edinburgh and I know of a couple of good engineering firms that could maybe do it if I supplied a quality piston ect.

That looks like it's been ran with no oil. There's no way you could do that sort of damage otherwise.

could have been previous to me owning it. I have always used the Halfords stuff. I did recentley use car plan cheap stuff. It has always been using the oil at a steady amount since I have been using the bike. Done about 2000 miles trouble free. I have also kept the bike well serviced.

:/

I pay £25 a litre for my oil. I'm not sure how good Halfords stuff is.

If in doubt buy fully synthetic Castrol 2t oil. It's usually about a 10er and NORFE reckons it's exactly the same stuff. I just like what I buy.

Anyway I'm not mechanic. I'm just saying. Looks like someone hasn't used any oil. Could be the fact that it may be running the original bore and you didn't notice the piston slap. Over time it's just worn the ring down and then that would happen almost instantly.

Once It is rebuilt I will only use top quality oils. It was rattling a bit on tick over. Do you think I am best to get a new head and piston on ect, and make sure that is the problem with the engine still in the bike to make sure that is the problem, before I start dismantiling the whole bike, Work would be much easier with the engine out, but I wouldnt know if it was then running as I would have no electrics ect.

Or judging by the state of the piston is it pritty much guaranteed that is what the problem is. Or is there a good chance simply fitting a new barrel and piston ect wont solve the problem. The bike still pushes in gear ect.

The halfords fully synthetic stuff is fine - Think it's £12 normally but only £6 odd with a trade card just stay away from the cheap 2T stuff it's nasty

Sure it was pretty much the same price or more expensive than the castrol stuff

Took the head off tonight and got the piston out. It has shattered at the base and the bits have went down into the crankcase. The piston is also cracked. here are the pics. I take it I will have to split the crankcase to get the bits out.

Think It has seen better days lol. I will get some pics of the head up tomorrow. It is scored but I dont see any heavy damage. Thanks for looking.

Yeah I think that is going to be the case unfotunatley. Is there no way I could fish the bits out with a magnet but I think there is to much play in the con rod anyway so the main bairings are probaly knackered. How much play should there be. I will be doing any work my self to keep costs down.

What do you think caused this sheer abuse from this bikes hard life?

looks like nathlaad used to own your bike biggrin looks like oil pump failure to me,or really cheap oil. that would cause the scores, could kill the bearings too causing the cracks as it wobbled about. defo a full rebuild i'd say. not worth putting a fresh top end on to find the crank bearings are shot (plus it could destroy your new top end hmm)

The pump has been using the oil at a steady rate and is properly adjusted as far as I am aware. Some idiot had put engine oil in the radiator expansion chamber but luckily there was no oil in the coolent when I drained it. Going to go ahead with the full rebuild. How much do you think I would be looking at for quality parts like gaskets seals and bearings for.the full job.

With the state of the bike when I got it. It wouldnt surprise me In the slightest that someone drove around with no 2 stroke oil whatsoever!!

for Left and right bearings - use Koyo - you'll be looking at about £40-£45 for the 2 (6305 R1 bearings - special 16mm), about 40-45 for the conrod kit, genuine gaskets about £25 and engine seal kit about £25ish... make sure the right hand crank seal is a double sprung seal..

hope that helps!!
