I got in to an argument this afternoon with a group of ramblers whilst out on the local byways they flagged me down so stopped thinking they wanted directions or help in some way but the moment i turned the bike off they went nuts telling me i should not be there and that they were calling the police and that they were not going to let me leave until the police turned up and that i was riding like an idiot and that i could of killed someone & one of them was writing my number plate down there was one old man ranting at me so much i could not understand half the words coming out of his mouth now i,m not a violent person but i was getting ready to punch somone i tried telling them that i was on byways and that it was legal and that started getting out there little maps trying to prove me wrong the stupid thing was that all the byways around here have signs up in the end i just decided to wait for the local police to turn up and when they did they done there checks and then backed me up 100% that still did not shut them up then they started telling police that i was riding like a nutter which was bollocks i was stood up riding about 15-20 mph around the ruts and muddy puddles and i told the police that and i cannot believe it they backed me up again as for the ramblers i did not get one apology and they was still arguing with the police as i left are they always such idiots i bet if i was on a horse the would of waved and said hello instead of acting like a bunch of jumped up lying ****s.

I finished work 1400 and thought take advantage of the warm wheather while we still have some and have a couple hours up on the byways i was only up there half an hour when i ran in to the ramblers and by the time the police turned up that was another half an hour gone then another half an hour went by talking to the police then went home after that so i lost an hour of riding time to the ****s if i see the same ramblers up there again i will slow right down flip the visor and give them a big smug grin as i go past

Glad it ended this way. I would write a letter to the local police thanking them for their actions. Puts you in good stead with them and helps stop them changing it to a restricted byway.

Good on you mate for making the most of these. Theres a very limited supply of them around my area. Most are now restricted byways meaning no motorised vehicles :(

Lol, easiest way: cover/remove number plate. Anyone gives you grief, give them the finger :)

Although everywhere I ride is illegal, get the odd chase from land rovers lol.

Yea me and mates use to go out on the lanes, Spray lube all on your plate then cover it in dusty mud.

My mate has a couple of these little clips on his, just keeps a little bit of cardboard or whatever tucked away and the clips hold it on the plate. Then when you get back on the road just pull it off. Although if you get caught I don't think my excuse of saying it'll keep the number plate clean will stand up in court lol.

Too right i new full well i was in the right so stayed so could see there faces. I have been stopped twice on those byways before by police all they do is a quick check to make sure you are legal then they let you carry on they are around those areas most weekends crusing about in a landrover trying catch/detour illegal off roaders mostly chavs on pitbikes and the odd crossers.

The weekend 4x4 drivers are starting to really tear them up now though they have started making extra little tracks off of the sides of the byways it looks a terrible mess i think they will restrict them soon if they carry on trashing them

I only really use my bike for laning and so far haven't had any aggro with knob heads. So either I'm lucky or you are unlucky.
The following applies to anyone riding a byway legally - if you know 100% that it's a byway (and it's not restricted) and someone gives you grief, just tell them to prove to you that what you are doing is illegal. You don't have to say anymore, not a word. Sooner or later they will realize that they are talking out of their arses and move on.
As far as riding like an idiot is concerned well that is just a matter of opinion - even if they had video it's difficult to prosecute.

Top marks for sticking around and a shame you didn't get any video - personally I don't stop for anyone, I just shout 'morning' or something and ride on.

And the biggest shame is that Toy Soldier didn't get a vid of his roll around - that would have been hysterical )

Good on you man. I've had that happen to my twice, and it's so ****ing hard to keep your temper down, but it's definitely the wise option.

The thing about ramblers, is that they're ramblers. People who dress like that and go out in public have probably got some degree of aspergers syndrome, so expect to get spazzy behaviour from them. It's the nature of the beast.

You've got two legal options. Option 1. Be totally passive, and pretty much ignore them until they **** off, or you do. Certainly don't swear at or threaten them. This is the best option.

Option 2. Still don't threaten, or swear, but smile, take the piss and generally wind them up. If you can get them riled enough to assault you, boom, it's takedown time. Make it a goodun though, the law usually only gives you one punch to play with. This is the most satisfying option.

Don't let it piss you off though. If you were riding at a sensible speed, they're the ****s, and they have to live their entire lives as ****s, which makes me feel a tiny bit sorry for them.

The problem on the lanes is there are good and bad on both sides as a biker and a walker I have seen both sides I have had some experiences of some so called bikers riding crossers as if they were on MX tracks riding as fast as they can with no regard to any one else and then I have had many walkers ranting on about some bike that has just gone past riding spot on doing nothing wrong , and have had some right arguments with them and you just cant win just takes 1 MX experience to taint them for life , and if we are honest we all know some plonkers on crossers that are just that plonkers we could well do with out , coss in the end I am afraid it is the good bikers that are going to be the losers , and what is often annoying to me is the walkers will see a 4x4 go by and say nothing

What makes it all the harder is that there is no definitive maps with the ones we ARE allowed on marked clearly and no signage to show you , and with all the reclassification going on it is some times hard to be sure who is right or wrong , in the Isle of Man all the lanes have signage to tell you but even over there they are coming under fire from the ------- ,vehicles aren't the only problem , water is a big causer of damage , you start of with a very small indentation in to the ground then it rains and water flows down the indentation and before you know it you have a trench that then becomes a stream that then becomes a river that then deepens in to a valley that then becomes a Dale or a Gorge and then we put a preservation order on it and class it as an area of outstanding beauty , well who would have thought such a thing ?? so does that mean that we can tell the ------- whatevers that we are doing our bit for tomorrow's -------- , well food for thought don't you think , God how I love a rant bring em on send them ------- to me now where's that step ladder to get down off this soap box LOL

The problem i have is towards the weekend 4x4 drivers in my area more then the ramblers because of what they are doing to the byways they used to be nice narrow pleasent trail/dirt roads and now the 4x4 drivers have trashed them completly there now twice as wide as they should be and like i said in my other post they have started making seperate deep muddy tracks to the side of the byways and now they have lots of very deep muddy holes along the byways some of which come up over my foot pegs i think if they carry on doing this then the byways will be closed

I agree with you but if a rambler sees you on your bike and then sees a 4x4 bet you get a frostier reaction than the 4x4 driver , now whats that about ??? but I do think as you say the damage is in places getting that bad that we will loose out in the end
