Ran oil dry! Then carried on running!

I've been the biggest idiot and completely forgot about the 2t oil! I was rushing to drive 25 miles in the dark and rain on the motorway and the bike kept cutting out over 50 I couldn't work out why so I stupidly kept starting it again with some revs to stir it into life! It only dawned on me to check the oil after doing this a good 8 times and many many miles later and the tank is bone dry! Temp Gauge didnt get much above mid way but the kick start does seem to have less compression. And will not start again! Sitting by the side of the m3 like a mug now thinking have u fooked it???? :(

Probably.

It's not so much the heat as oppose to the bare metal on metal contact that just ruins the piston and barrel costing you £££

I hope it's just the case of a rebore and new piston :\

Yeah but cba to carry a bottle of 2t with you everywhere. Especially if the bikes an everyday commuter...

I agree if it's a summer bike or a 'Fair weather bike' But for everyday use it just isn't practical

That is my fear and I've still got a long wait next to this noisy motorway to dwell on that! :-/
You reckon I shouldn't even bother trying to start it with oil in case I damage it more?

Don't even attempt it.

If you haven't seized it then you're luck. You're going to need to bleed the oil system if it's ran dry. Otherwise you won't suck any oil through.

You'll need to pour 2 stroke down the barrel and wait for the oil to go through the system.

Yeah. There's nothing worse than wondering whether or not you're getting oil.

I just love it when it smokes LOADS>

You'd be surprised how small a bottle with 250ml of 2t oil is, smaller than a 330ml can of coca-cola, and you can carry that in a bike jacket pocket, personally I use a rucksack, with a small nail varnish remover bottle of 125ml if I know I'm going to do a fair few miles, plus I always have a full 10l tank to start off with. just forked out £20 for an Acerbis tool bag that attatches to the rear mudguard, you can get a fair bit of stuff in that too.

Of course there will be air in the system, cheers for the advice. I guess I better order a couple of new (gen) head gasket and put my Bn engines top end back together.
Hm yea manual lubeing will def mean you can't go wrong.

Yes that's true I always have a back pack too. I think you guys have swayed me. Do you need to do anything to the pump or do you just take the bottle and hoses off and that's it?

Take the cable off at the 2 into one cable junction box, under the tank, snip the pipes about 1" from their spigots, then bang in self tappers to block off the pipes, for the main tube, an M6 short bolt goes nicely inside sealing it.

Cheers mate will do so.
As soon as im now forced get the nice old md engine rebored and running sweet that i temporarily took off that 1989 blue beauty i bought a couple months ago. I know have the notion to get the 89 bike sorted so stripping down this week and then powdercoating next, never done this before so do i need to rub all the rust down to bare metal on everything or does the shot blasting do it all for you??

shot blasting takes it back to bare metal bud. gutted for ya,cooking a lump is a major bummer no premix also means its getting the oil at low revs, unlike the crump pump biggrin

The bike was built with autolube Yamaha had years to make it work and it works giveing the correct ratio for top and bottom of the rev range unlike premix if your worryed about runing out of 2 stroke check the tank if your worryed about if its going in or.not put some clear pipe on the feed to the manifold

Yamaha did get it wrong Toy, theres too many things can go wrong compared to running pre-mix. Going down a steep hill, no throttle no pump mate, you can run out of oil miles from nowhere like somebody did in here the other day, split pipes can leak oil out, air blocks if not bled properly, scooters on the other hand don't use a cable for the pump, they use a worm drive on the crank that drives the pump, much better idea if you ask me, as for correct ratio top and bottom end unlike pre-mix? wassat about?, you run fuel and oil at 40:1 you get fuel and oil in the carb at 40:1.

If you change to premix theoretically you should up the jetting to compensate .

It's effort. Way it up. Do you use the bike every day. Is it your sole transportation. If it is then it's probably going to be hassle carrying s bottle of oil everywhere you go.

If this isn't the case they you may want to. Since you'd only need the bottle when you go to fill up or go out for long rides. Problem might be that if left for prolong periods of time the oil might settle. Leaving you with shît loads of oil at the bottom of the tank.

Also. Since on the DT the oil doesn't go into the carb on standard setup you'll need to increase maintenance to the carb. It should only be cleaning. But still another thing to consider.

I use to have a yamaha aerox which was ,70kitted carb pipe ect . I ran that pre mix but you have a seat to put the 2 smoke in .

Been thinking of buying a yz 125 road legal or any type of motorcross.

And what im thinking of doing is making bracket under the let or right rear pannel,That will hold the (2 smoke bottle) ,Would like to see some one make one.

The bag seems like a better idea. The poblem then is. When parked in town what stops some little shït from stealing it! Bak to sqaure 1. At least if you made a compartment you could find some way of locking it. But it really is a lot of trouble.

Like o said.

If you're using the bike daily then just keep it auto lube.

If you're using the bike on a 'fair weather' day the. Pre mix shouldn't be too much of a chose since you'll only fill up once a trip.

Yea that bag looks good.

But round my way , little ****s would take that thinking youve left it with money in or something.Which then would attract the wrong people around the bike.

Why can't ya just leave ya 2t tank on but bunged up so it dont leak and have a small bottle stored in the tool kit area then as n when its required fill ya small bottle up from ya 2t tank for premix , unless you want to save weight on the 2t tank
