How much do you recon it would cost to get a barrell replated and rebored from pjme?
thinking about getting a barrell second hand payin for it to get done whilst i use the current barrel for getting out and about, then getting a brand new pistion so i have a fresh top end
It depends on what size you go to as to wether you need to machine the powervalve. As Yamaha only make a certain number of OS pistons i wouldnt go passed that without modding the powervalve. I think that most of the damage that is caused by the pv and pistong colliding is when the engine gets very hot and the piston expands.
I personally have never bored out a gasket and have used standard for my last project which was 1.25mm oversize. It's running fine. I've only ever heard a few people on this forum talking about boring out gaskets. Not heard it anywhere else personally.
PJME, when i spoke to them about boring work, said they would machine the powervalve inclusive of the price of the bore. I'm sure if you contact them first they will do it.
it wil be about £85 + postage costs to and from their site for a rebore with a brand new mitaka piston kit. Very reasonable!

I also shaved back the powervalve on the dt in my photo as it was 1.25mm OverSized. It was a right paint though so next time i get a barrel re bored ill get the shop to do it where they have better tools to machine away a certain amount.
Yeah that's a good point, also I wanna ask another question, to do a top end on a dt, do you have to drop the engine? Doesn't look like there's much space.. Never done anything like that on a bigger bike, fitte a big bore kit to a speedfight which was a piece of piss but I can see this been a bit harder Lool
No you dont. The head and barrel will come off as one, or the head then barrel which is easier. The piston has to be at the bottom of its stroke so it's easier with two people but can be done on your own. This is all based on your piston not being seized to the bore. As soon as you are clear of the studs, the barrel will lift straight up rather than at an angle so theres more room than first appears. This is on an R. Never done an RE but the same frame and engine.
