Wiring Nightmare!!!

I've finally got my DT running well, but when I put the indicator/press the horn the power is being totally cut from the battery. It's as if the flasher relay is making everything flash on the bike. The power valve servo constantly resets and the Speedo I have fitted flashes. Then the rectifier will start to smoke if I give it any revs.

Seriously any help would be sooo greatly appreciated!

My DT (don't worry, the KTM graphics have been removed :))

I'm using a new set of relays as they came with the loom but I'm using the TDR rectifier. I've actually ordered a new one and it should be here Tuesday.
It just seems a little odd that it worked for a little while then went back to this.

I'd go with that, first port of call is the ignition switch I reckon

I've actually recently replaced it with a new one too. How do you suggest I troubleshoot it?

Did you get the right ignition switch for your year bike? there are differences. Plus as you say you've recently changed yours, I'd re-check the connections again, for example a dirty Black/White wire can look like a Black earth wire in bad light.

Tried 2 new batteries too. My only theory is a live is getting an earth and an earth is getting a live. But finding it isn't easy!

Yeah it's definately the correct switch. I guess I could take it off and hot wire it just to rule it out.

Might be an idea to do this by P.M or do I move it to " how to hotwire a DTR so I can pinch it" thread

More it to the hot wire thread I think nev.

I find the best way to hot wire the DT is to take a live and an earth and stick them both on your tongue. Gives you a right buzz!

It takes no more than 15 mins to fit the loom from scratch, just take it off and start again and check everything when your plugging it all back in. It would make no difference what so ever if you were using a few TDR bits flasher unit etc. Ive made looms from scratch for DT,s Its sounds like the reg/rec is gone straight away if its smoking and getting hot it will make the battery bubble so watch it doesnt go bang on you and check all the earth's are good on the frame and engine.

Cheers bud. I've checked and rechecked it about 5 times now. That's the main reason I bought a new reg/rec as it's pretty much the last thing to try.

One thing I haven't mentioned is I'm by-passing the electric start parts.

Yeah it is that way. My new rec/reg arrived today so I'll put it on tomorrow and go from there.

Cheers for the help

Sorted! New rectifier has done the job. Thank god for that.

Just tried the KTM exhaust for the first time....proper weird. The band is far too high! I'll have a blown engine in no time if I leave it on.
