whats everyones views on full power vs resticted on reliability, thing is my dt wont rev past 7500 well thats what the rev counter says, ive got the cdi 3rm-20 and done the reed switch in the speedo and yes its better and actually around town its brilliant so im actually ok with the power as is , so do you think im better off leaving the powervalve alone and keeping reliability or would it not make any difference to reliability to get the powervalve fully working and reving higher ? im going to be getting a ktm 690 in the summer so i can have all the power i need then .

Pfft. The day's were restricted for emissions only mate. Derestricting the bike will only put the bike BACK to where Yamaha INTENDED the bike to be ran.

Two strokes require maintenance just like any other machine. Apart from piston and rings are considered maintenance on two strokes and should be done regardless of how the bikes been riden. Put the bike back to how Yamaha wanted it to be and you won't notice any change in reliability. It will only be down to poor maintenance that will fail your bike.

+1 to what has been said poor maintenance and out right abuse are what will affect reliability and the extra fun you get is well worth the extra cost of proper maintenance

yeah totaly agree a bike is like your body bad upkeep and not looking after it will result in bad running break down ..

tbh when I used my bikes every day I used to spend at least one sunday every two weeks giveing it a full service clean and lube fresh oil . grease cables ect check and tighten bolts and screws the works .

with the right care a bike can run great for years

no i will keep it, i look at bikes ive had in the 80s and how much they are worth and i think the dt is a future classic , i had a bultaco pursang which i bought in 1982 for 100 quid now you cant find the model i had

for less than 2500 quid, i wish id never sold it and my IT Yamaha aswell .

Hahahaha! My dt gets ramped everyday. Pinned to the max. Abused. Chucked dropped smashed. You name it its probably had it. Still going strong. It's always been well maintained and that's where it's come into its own.

still dont buy it lol ,i wouldnt get another from the moment ii bought it there was trouble ,maintenance is obviously key but design is the rest of it i maintained this bike at 1 point all the oil was replaced every ride ! iridium plug hi flow filter the works ,half the issue was the carb tbh and im yet to see the benefit of the new one as im getting the top end done this week when thats done il see if she stays faithful .

if not i will sell it and do the bike test and get a 4t .

Mines never missed a best. I've only ever ran the engine on silkolene. Air filter has been washed a few times. And got an iridium spark plug. That's it. Changed the coolant and gearbox oil a few times but apart from that I haven't really touched the bike. Never needed to.

You are just unlucky. At the end of the day your bike is what ten years old? Where as your Chinese bike was what new or newish? I bet if your Chinese bike got rode everyday like your dt does it wouldn't last more than a year. 3 at very most. So you have to take into consideration that it is an older bike. Unlike my re which was 5 years old at the time of purchase. And since then I've looked after it.

Lol. I put a kick start on my re. Much more reliable. Eventually the electric start motor is going to pack up. So it's nice to know I've got an alternative. Oil? Really! Four strokes burn oil as well mate lol.

With four strokes you've got to worry about oil AND oil filter. So don't bs me about worrying about oil. At least with two strokes you KNOW you've got to watch out for the oil. And you don't even have to watch out. The bike will tell you need oil.

You have been unlucky still broke. Look at the abuse my DT received and it was still going strong when I saved it. Mines was probably the finest example of abused DT there was in such a short amount of time. I would never buy any chinese machinery it's all cheap junk, lawnmowers, bikes the list goes on. All that crap in the pound shops ect comes from there, the bikes are no differant. You will buy 10 of them to one decent bike/drill/hoover ect ect lol.
