Bike gave me a fright yday!!

Well lads, was out for a spin yday with my mate on the bikes cuz it was such a nice day! Done some country back-roads, came to a long straight & decided to give it the big 'un, and check out my top speed! All was grand until I hit about 8k revs in 6th gear.... the engine sounded as if it cut out and the bike lurched, coughed and shuddered violently, I started slowing down dropping down through the gears and then the bike start revving again! I pulled in to the side of the road with my mate and left it to cool down for a bit and to get myself together..... not a nice thing to happen at 120km/h!

After about 10-15mins I started it up again and it sounded grand! Not a bother! we took off again and the bike seemed real jumpy! I didn't screw it just kept it under 6k revs! Got it home in one piece and its still driving now but im terrified to screw it hard again! Can anyone shed some light on this subject? whyat in the name of fook was that??

Btw it had just been filled up with 2-stroke and the old piston had been cleaned up and put back into it!

Cheers,

Kev! wink

And wait, the gasket, is it one of them white ones? Or one of them metal coloured ones, come in this pack:

If so, it's probably that. Swap it for an Athena gasket, all the boys on here have told me this and had problems with this particular gasket.

And I suggest checking my thread out, the guys all told me what to go through, might be some help to you as well.

No we didn't bleed the oil system when we were doing it! hmm My Dad was just saying there that maybe the bike needs to be upjetted and it was a bit of a heat seize that happened when I was screwing it!?

Haha nath popped his DRZ a few times?? Aren't them engines supposed to be pretty bulletproof?? The one I'm looking at has a 460 big bore kit, full yoshi RS4 system, hot cams, JD jet kit, bigger carb and K&N filter among some other tidy little mods! only 14k miles on her too! I will look after it like a baby if I get it in time!! biggrin

Back on topic anyways, does it sound like the jetting could be the problem on the TDR?? Could it have been a slight heat sieze?? I have never changed the jets in it, and its de-restricted, End can on it and the airbox mod done! I'm getting worried, cuz I need the money from selling this to afford the DRZ! If it pops I am fcuked!! blankstare

You only cleaned the piston? You didn't put a new one in?

Probably that piston is gone.

Take the exhaust off, and switch the ignition on and off, look up the exhaust port to see the condition of the piston.

Sorry should have explained that a bit better! I had a new mitaka piston kit in it, but there was piston slap with it in which didn't sound nice at all! The old piston was in very good condition and the rings were well within the service limit! So I decided to put that back in rather than buying another piston kit!

But you had it rebored? If so, the original piston would be too small?

Sounds like the bore isnt within service limit. Check it. It may be necessary for a revore.

Are you sure?

Ah well in that case it may be inconsistencies in the borr. Even more expensive.

Can nicasil barrels be rebored Calum?? I was under the impression that they couldn't and thats why you have to take extra care with them? confuse

lol I meant bulletproof in terms of supermoto's! A lot of the time when they blow up its from not being maintained properly and being absolutely ragged around! lol!
