I've got my old 50 sitting in the shed getting dusty so I figured I'd prevent it from rotting into the ground and do something special with it. What could be more special than swapping it's 7bhp(ish) engine with a 33bhp YZ125 lump?
I'm building it with the intention of creating something quite like the KTM Free ride, small, light weight and easy to throw around the local greenlanes and possibly a few Enduro events. Hoping the power to weight will be entertaining.
This was it after a tidy up last year.
Picked up a 1991 YZ frame and engine for £180, also saw it running before he broke the bike which is reassuring.
Started the strip down yesterday, TS engine out, along with loom, airbox and oil tank. Gonna whack all the old s**t on eBay to scrape together some funds for the ensuing nightmare.
Planning on running it with a daytime MOT only meaning I can scrap all the wiring, headlight, indicators and the rest of the added weight. hoping to get the weight down to between 65kg and 70kg by the time I'm finished with it.
Had a little offer up with the YZ engine earlier, can't wait to get this thing on the dirt haha.
I'll be updating this thread as the project progresses.
Yeah there's a lot of room in the frame which is helpful.
I'll definetly be uprating the brakes, leaving the drums on would be suicide haha, I'm looking into fitting usd's so I can get a disc on the front, I might just leave the drum on the rear but haven't decided yet.
Im sure with some homework you could find a hole rear swingarm and suspension setup to fit, meaning you'll have better stiffer suspension and a decent brake at the rear! Keep us posted dude!
I know a Rieju MRX front end will go through as I've seen it done, it's tricky finding forks that are a similar height to the TS as i want a very low seat height and centre of gravity. Anyone know what the length Pulse Adrenaline forks are?
Still not sure whether to change the rear brake, might leave it but I'm famous for changing my mind so not sure at the moment haha.
This is the bike as it stands today, old engine mounts have been shaved off ready for some new ones, I love the skininess of it lol.
Sorry, I don't know how to rotate the pictures? :S
Green laning in winter, it gets dark at about 5PM, if you're a while away from home, the boys in blue would have reasons to pull you over.
Should have probably done this with a TS 125. If the police see "Yamaha" written on the engine, they'll be asking questions, also as a 50CC it should do no more than 30MPH. Seek registering it as a 124CC before riding it, this way you can't get done for going over 30MPH.
Interesting project, keep us updated.
Also if you want to rotate pictures, open them in paint and then rotate right 90 degrees. Then save and upload to the photo site you use.
Lights and wiring= More weight. I'm trying to keep all un-necessary weight off the bike, i'll just have to plan when i use the bike. I'll have the DT for winter greenlaning and this thing for the summer etc.
hmm, true but swapping the 50cc with a yz lump is a little more interesting than swapping a 125 for a 125 haha. i also had this sitting in the shed and wanted to use it. i'll be registering it as a 125 when it's finished, it'd be stupid not to.
Just planning and gathering parts at the moment mate. It's a college project so I won't be able to start it till around september which is a bummer. Gonna send the engine off for a full rebuild before then. Also got a complete upside down front end including wheel/caliper/disc etc off one of these:
great thing is, the fork length is exactly the same so the geometry of the bike won't be thrown out at all
Got the engine in the frame so the sprockets were in line, took some doing but got there in the end.
Made up templates for the new engine mounts out of cardboard, next step is to get them cut out of some 3mm steel sheet i got a hold of.
Managed to score a pair of very tidy Aprilia wheels as the one that came with the front end was cracked, rear wheel was a bonus, might do something with it at a later date.
Here's a pic of the engine and exhaust in the frame and one of the new wheels
Gonna be a bit of a task trying to wedge the rads in somewhere, the bike is so little hahaha
So it's been a while since I last posted on this...
Time for an update
Progress isnt half as fast as I would like because I only get a few hours a week to work on it but I'm getting there slowly...
Engine is nearly in the frame for good. Front mounts are on, rear mounts to be welded in next week and then need to make some spacers to put the front sprocket inline with the rear.
Once the engine is in I can focus on getting the Aprilia USD front end on, gonna need to machine a stem up and press it into the yokes.
Yeah I was going to fillet the edges but got carried away and just went and welded them on haha fingers crossed they should be alright...
I think I'll take my time and do the rest properly haha
