Well guys, almost finished college for the summer, will be starting full time work within the next 2-3 weeks so the money should be coming in soon, thank fook! By the end of the summer I should have a nice bit saved away, so that has got me thinking about a new project! Here's what I was thinking (need advice on whether it'd be feasible or not):
Yamaha DT125R frame stripped bare and powdercoated,
YZ 125 engine rebuilt, and fitted to frame
Full Yz DEP exhaust, V Force reed block, peformance filter and re-jetted carb
Use original plastics, wiring etc. from the DTR. Just have them refurbished. UFO rear fender and a new style SM front mudguard.
DTX front forks & wheel, rear DTX wheel - both powder coated to suit colour scheme.
Use the original 16t front and 57t rear sprocket setup from the DT.... checked it out on the gear commander program, adds a lot of top end to the yz engine, and I'd imagine with the 33+hp it would still be nice and torquey. Link to the program here (very VERY usefull): http://www.gearingcommander.com/
So what ya think?? Would it work? And if so what do you think it'd be like? Any advice? I know that the engine would require a heap load of maintenance (oil change every 5hours etc.), but it'll be ridden very little, one day of the weekend if even, when I need to let the inner hooligan out!
There is a lot of places around me popping up that are selling MX engines and parts so the yz engine would be easy to source, but the cheap DTR donour bike not so much. Could flog off the old engine from it to afford some bits and bobs for the rebuild though I suppose.

A yz125 engined bike would be horrible on the road imo...
I'd go for a yz125, get it on the road, put a tzr engine in it and SM it!
TZR engine would be dificult to get my hands on over here! be very expensive too! plus it would be a headache trying to wire up the yz for the road! How often do you need to rebuild yz engines??
Bear in mind the yz lump is just an idea.... would it really be rubbish on the road even with that sprocket setup I mentioned above? The other route I could take is a 170cc Athena kit for the original DT engine and rebuild the bottom end with new con rod, seals, bearings etc. What kinda power can be got from that athena kit btw if set up properly with bigger carb etc.?
Top end on a yz usually needs doing every 50-60 hours. I've heard of people doing 80+ hours on them when they're geared for the road though so still decent.
That 50-60 hours is when they're pinned every second though, so you can probably get 80+ with the gearing set up for road.

Thanks for that mate!
Sure thats not bad at all man! An hour on the wknd would all the abuse it would really get, and I wouldn't be going too far on it either! Sure I have the er6 as my every day ride! Few lads from another forum have put together a decent sm track a few miles away from me so would be going there for a bit of craic on it! With the yz engine set up properly with the DEP and V force I'd say there would be a decent thump out of it.... 33hp as standard so I'd say it'd be easily bumped up to 37-38hp! Be some wheelie machine, and I love the noise out of the 2t MXers!
If you love the sound of a 2t crosser having its head kicked in go on YouTube and search for jimmy decotis cr125 and just watch him ring the life out of his cr125!!

FASTER FASTER UNTIL THE THRILL OF SPEED OVERCOMES THE FEAR OF DEATH
If geared properly and well maintained theres no reason why the yz engine can't last as long as the dt engine.
But gearing commando won't help you here. The gearbox is different on the YZ so you're going to have descrepancies there. Also the dtx wheels are differeng diameters so you're going to have different diameter sprockets. Remember its not the teeth that determine the speed. Its the diameter. It just so happens to be that for a specific wheel, the amount of teeth it has is directly proportional to the wheel. But like i said, different wheels mean that calculator won't work unless you work out the ratios from them.
Was contemplating road reg'ing a YZ... but there's a lot of proccesses to go through here in order to get it "road legal" and every one of them a headache! So if the YZ engine was placed directly into a DT which is road reg with lights, indicators, mirrors already, it would save an awful lot of hassle! As I said above though.... I'll be hard pushed to find a DT here! Last 1 I seen for sale was about 2 months ago and it was going for 1,400! I'd be looking for something more along the lines of 400!

Thanks Calum... Top information as always! I will have to do more research on the matter! Maintenance isn't a problem... I always look after my bikes like they were my children and the fact that it'll rarely be ridden would mean the service intervals would probaby be close enough to that of DT thats been used as an every day bike! Except for the oil changes of course!
I know people who have got mx'ers for road use and use it on weekends. They rarely have problems. Changed the piston and rings once a year depending on use. Rebore IF necessary but not always the case.
Try finding a cheap DT, one with a blown engine or something. Will be the cheapest solution to getting your hands on a project one. The engine is no good to you anyway.
And putting the YZ engine into a DT is also problematic, wiring etc. Or to cut it all short, have it like a proper supermoto / race bike, no ignition to turn the engine on and off, just a kill switch. Just wire up the lights and job done. Also, you can get a daytime MOT, so then you just need a working brake light, speed-o and working brakes etc.
The RPM reader probably wouldn't work without a load of work either.
