Weird liquid problem after top-end rebuild
Permalink

Hello,

So I did my top-end rebuild with Athena 170cc kit. All gaskets new etc... Today I ran it and it started leaking somekind of iron-coloured fuel-like-smelling liquid from exhaust from the cylinder. Also the spark plug was covered with it. I was wondering if it could be some coolant that went into cranckcase when I removed 125cc cylinder or it might be transmission oil. If it is transmission oil, what can I do? I checked transmission also with removing the cap - it seemed fine or should I see some oil in there? Is sae 10w-40 okay for gearbox?

The bike ran stable but when hitting the throttle it stalled after revving up a bit ( Many times). Might be that I didn't have much fuel in tank ( will try with more fuel tomorrow).

Any suggestions?

Make sure you've got an exhaust gasket in the exhaust port.

Exhaust studs done up properly.

I have the gasket. (new one) Ill tighten up the bolts more. The exhaust might be a bit bent also - I cut it open to remove restrictors and when re-welding the measurements surely change a bit.

Is it a brand new athena kit on it mate?

Powervalve installed correctly. No cracks or gashes in the exhast port area?

What pipe you go standard. Does it sit flush with the exhuast port?

Okay. It is fine now. Just exhaust wasn't sitting in correctly. How far should the rpm go? Mine is max at 9k, running bit rich.

You might have a restriction on the bike. Have you earthed a green and black wire?

What top end you got? Standard or Athena? Mine maxes about 9-10K. Needs setting up though. Which will be done soon, still got parts for the DTR hogging up my shed.

O yeah. The athena will rev lower unless you slter the port timing.

Well my mixture is not right. It starts making weird sounds @ 8k and the spark plug is black. I need to try a smaller main jet or lower the needle. I havent removed the restrictor from collector and I haven't find any guides about the wires.

What year is yours? I guess yours has a pre-1996 loom.

And Liam all DTR's after 95 or 96 have a max limit of 10K RPMs. If you want to get rid of it for 2,000 extra RPMs you can get a pre-96 loom. smile

Not worth it IMHO, unless you upgraded the engine the 10K RPM wouldn't really matter. biggrin

Lol. Reed switch and earth the green and black wire. Wait for a massive grin at the powergains.

To get a sneak preview, open the exhaust port and turn the ypvs to get a preview :)
