02 r6  one week of blitzing it loving it getting used to the handling  an all  .     going  round a roundabout in 2nd on the way home  the thing starts joting like a mutha nearly killed me  .  changed the gear springs an no joy diagnosed it as the 2nd 1st and 6th naffed in the tranny it all needs to be rebuilt now  im gutted.  on the upside i made £+50profit on what i paid for the zzr  a year ago after using it  to do 21,000 miles .

so now im not a happy bunny summer here  really warm an the bikes stush  stored away

The pre 2003 engines need to come out Trip iirc, post 2003 the transmission box slides out separately.

Ohh no mate never let myself be stranded but the sportsbikes out of action for now i just like a bit of both wets not to safe on the gasgas can be a little twitchy out off corners in the wet i expect tail happiness,,

Some days its a 4t 100+ day. Other days are backs roads hoolignaigans days got my old trusty kickstarter 2stroke still just not on a yam 2stroke anymore.

Im on my gasgas which has saved itself a place in my heart now turned out be a pretty amazing little machine , they put all the best bits they could find from the top bikes like . husky, ktm, kx, cr an made the ec.

Not bad at all impressive if anything just underated in market branding as yet with mainly known for there trials txt ragas an stuff i think the enduros came along in 99 .

not a clue on deltabox or not mate i know its not the cartrige type transmission.

The engine comes out gets flipped an stripped the oil pump n the rest come out down to the center crank remove all the gears shifter forks an shift drum
then stick the strong 03 to 05 5sl tranny in there instead.

Thats the plan 3dogs on the back of gear two seems to be the problem where as there's 5 dogs on gear 2 and 6 on a 5sl r6 tranny

Its just about to cost an arm an a leg as i dont know the how to..   Iv ordered a mobile mechanic out so at least i can see whats going on  help an learn from the expienence for next time

so iv bit the bullet today its time i knew about these trannys . She getting stripped.  i know the how to  iv read that much  but its all new  im not keen on   trying new things    im the kinda person that eats the same meals for years

Ah, at least you have a back up bike or two then! :)

I'm stranded right now. I can't afford the insurance or space for two bikes. The DT hogs my whole shed, if I got another bike it'd probably end up getting nicked.

Good luck with it mate.

Aren't the engines really heavy on these? Get a few friends to help you lift it around, lol ;)

Nooooooooooo NOo noo NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lol no powerbands here just power all the way ,, and at the mo  a 2nd gear clunk clicky clunk clunk i did find a way of overcoming a naffed 2nd rag the nads outta 1st an double shift to 3rd . problem solved..

Hahaha   funny you should say that lifting the tail end of the r6 is actually about the same as  lifting the dt  tail end   the bike physically isnt heavy at all the engine is pretty much the whole bikes weight ,, i was thinking two car jacks dropping it and supporting the top end with some rope to the framework so it doesnt fall over while dropping it.
Im of to get the 5sl tranny today ,, an hopefully some gaskets too .

the mechanics iv asked can stick it up there asses ill have a crack at it myself an if i get stuck £25 an hour for a mobile mechanic ,,, most shops are saying its not worth it may as well have a full rebuild at £1500 to £2000 lol. best i can get is being quoted £600+ to drop the engine remove an oil pan an oil pump the stator plate an base of the crankcase

pull out the gears an replace put it all back together

roughly £200max if i do it myself   big difference

i though that but there 600 to 900 from what im seeing ,,,,the rest all good mate it goes fuel injection soon after so you need to do the loom cdi all of that business .
where as the 03 to 05 model 2nd gear seems to sort it out for good

5 little lugs on the gear for it lock in rather than the 3 lugged weak 02 2nd gear that wear away ,, read my stuff now m8 lol

on a mission  shes naked   but iv stopped for now    gotta wait on the shop to get the gaskets to  be a day or 2 .

ill get the bits in first before  i drop an open this engine   do it all in one quick hit

Couldn't you get a new lump from a later model? To avoid this transmission problem reoccurring?

I have never heard of these problems on the early R6,s what a nightmare, mind you I suppose your going to start running into problems with the age of it now, like anything else the older they get the more owners mileage hammer and lack of maintenance they tend to get good luck with it anyway. I had the 6th go on my K4 gixxer 750 a week after the factory warranty ran out years ago, fixed it and sold the thing then it went again a year od later................

yeh those gsx's are known for it too ,, the pre 03 r6 is real common. its all over the net at around 20k it seems to happen, I Have full 03 gearbox n all the bits are still sitting about waiting to be done , the mechanic i asked who was up for its been hiding from me in all this hot whether,, iv been on the gasgas alot latley but when i ride the r6 about i do short shift 2nd to 3rd or rag 1st so 2nd gear kicks in above 5.5k where the slip happens its working for me for now which scares me bit to pull it to bits cos it probably wont work after iv messed

Dont ride the R6 or you might do more damage, when the 6th went on mine I had to ride it home 150ish miles and it ended up stuck in 3rd...........

The gasser wont let u down, my mate has a Blue 06 EC300 thats never missed a beat, cracking bikes.............

Aye I agree with scrimmy doing more harm than good with riding it. Sportsbikes are complex things aswell! Never enjoyed working on any of mine

I know its not good need top get it sorted out sharpish ,, from what id read i thought it would be ok. theres many r6 riders just putting up with it for over a year or so before sorting it out ,, i thought it would be ok so long as i dont let it get worse ie not let the slip happen at all so theres no fresh shards of broke off 2nd gear dogs flapping about in the engine
