Electric start not working (SOLVED! Explanation inside)

My electric starter stopped working again. Same thing happened during the winter now and then, but then it would suddenly start working after a while.

All that happens when I press the electric start button is a "click" which comes from the thing where the fuses are. If you touch it you can even feel something is clicking.

The cable I've marked is the one that goes to the electric starter. Tried to earthen it when pressing the e.start button, and it came spark, so it's getting electricity..

Now when I read on the internet, everyone is like "check your battery". But before it would start really easy. And during the winter it would do the same thing now and then, and suddenly it would just start working again. I've tried to start it with almost no charge so I know what it's like when the battery is low on charge.

strange that it would start working after a while always during the winter, usually when it was really cold this would happen. Could something be loose inside there?

Could it be some relay or something inside there that's broken?

I tested make it bypass the solenoid thing but nothing happened
also tried to nock the starter engine with a soft hammer, but no luck.

Another thing i just noticed is that if I push the electric start button when the bike is running, it cuts the ignition!
Normally it should not do that, normally the electric engine should go around and you would hear it go around..

think the thing your showing us is the starter solenoid / relay ?

poor battery can make them just click also Check the earth/live cables are fitted to the battery securely, the same for the live feed to and from the solenoid.

maybe take all the wires of and clean the terminals .

could also be the starter motor you can test if the motor is ok by running a wire direct to it [ but wait for others to comment first as I am no expert ]

Also try tapping the starter motor with something like the handle of a screwdriver while you're trying to start the bike because it may just be sticking.

you ever taken a starter motor apart ?? could be fcked or it could just be the relay or battery job is to find wich one is duff .

As MDK says clean all terminals. The motor earths itself to the crankcase when bolted on so make sure they are clean to.

just start with same old check with electrics check and look over all whires and parts for cracks breaks or lose/coroded connections if all ok try to eliminate offending part if you have spares swap over bits helps if you have a mate with the same bike to swap over relay ect .

on old bikes we would start them by putting a screwdrive across the relay serminals kinda bypassing the realay and ignition switch not sure if this did any damage or if you should try it as we did this on field bikes or scrappers .

Step one dismatle the clutch
Step two buy the kick start mechanism and lever
Step three install mechanism and lever
Step four forget the starter motor

Jokes. I literally don't know but am dreading the day mine goes.

Tried bumping the bike? Then try pushing the button.

It should start if I make the electricity bypass the solenoid/relay thing? Because I tried that, but nothing happened. (gonna try it again just to be sure)


I've tried tapping the startermotor, gonna try that again aswell, a bit harder hehe..

just so weird that same thing happened during the winter, but if I'd wait and try shake the bike and turn ignition on and off... (no idea really what I did to make it work), but then it would suddenly work again.. Usually when it was cold and when it had stood still for a day in the cold

but this time, it just all of a sudden stopped working when I stopped the bike to fill up some petrol. This might have happened one other time during the summer but not 100% sure

I find sometimes mine just spins out and doesn't turn over or anything. Turn the ignition on and off snd it's fine. Spinny.

Check your rollers Callum. I had a big headache wit mines. Turns out when I reassembled with grease it was making them stick and they were not being thrown outward under the momentum. Cleaned them with carb cleaner no problems since.

by the sounds of it could be starter motor maybe pull it of and open it up to take a look . not sure if you have to take side case of also ?

I'll take the side cover off tomorrow and have a look. Gotto look on the internet how these electric engines are built, don't wanna mess something up I dont know how to fix :P Well whatever it's already broken haha

think you will have to get under it and look how the starter motor is bolted on not sure if the bolts are inside the case or outside ???

once you remove it try the starter then see if it trys to turn maybe and even turn it by hand see how it feels or sounds there is big magnets inside a motor and some times they break free of break up .

so if you get it off and it is the motor get some pics on lets work out if it can be fixed or if you will need a new one . looking at new prices maybe a used one would be better and in some cases you could buy a full engine with starter for the below price lol or as some one says fit a bloody kick starter

yup, I'll need to take the sidecover off

Two bolts are so tight that they are about to go round on the sidecover.. Need to cut a line on the boltheads so I can use a big flat screwdriver
I'll try get them up after the weekend..

yeah suppose its one of those places that get all the dirt grime and water bashing that we never grease or wd I have learnt over years to take extra care of those kind of spots and bolts or screws in those areas wd 40 and slap on some grease maybe once a fortnight gets messy but long term saves snapping a bolt the zaust bolts also get some tlc ..


good luck removeing the bolts and look forward to finding out if it is the starter and seeing pics to see if we can rescue it

Need to replace the piece of coal with a new.
I've seen that they sell on the internet so I know that you can get new ones.
I will call the closest yamaha dealer and probably they can get it for me

Found out now that they are called "carbon brushes" or "brushes" in english hehe

Found the problem!

Inside the startermotor the plus cable and the minus cable goes to a piece of coal, which is pressed against the rotor with springs.
The plus cable was broken.

My brother tried to solder it, but it wouldn't hold. He tried again and the piece of coal cracked because of the heat.

So he tried without the piece of coal, just adding some more cable so it would touch the rotor just to try.

...And it worked for a day haha :D

A short guide how to remove the startmotor.

Firstly you need to remove the sidecover and the magnet

Then you need to take off the cable from the relay, where the fuses are, and carefully take it out so it's hanging loose beside the starter engine.
Then remove these two screws

And the starter motor will come off.

To open the motor up, you need to unscrew the two screws on it (5, 5.5 or 6mm screws, dont remember but they were small). Then nock it easy and pull the thing in two.

Brushed arrived to my yamahadealer today, but it's 30km away from here so I'm not getting them today. Any day soon though
They costed 15euros (=13pounds) for a pair

great stuff and lol at the ( peice of coal ) yeah most motors have brushes one of the most common things to go in washing machines ect but so easy to replace and fix .

My starter died today, could be same thing mine is just clicking haha. anyone got an ebay link or item code etc for these things? i'll check it out over the week
