well decided to take bike out for decent run today... first in months. bloody chain decides to lose split link and come off cracking crankcase where the gear change seal is. not impressed and currently awaiting AA recovery.  hopefully should be easy to weld up?

Ouch. Lucky you have recovery. Long walk home is what I had to do with mine when it broke down. (About four times)

Which way did you have the little clip thing there on? To the left (how it is in the picture) or to the right?

They're supposed to be on to the right, or a stone can flick up and knock it off, really unlucky but it happens! Sounds like that's what has happened here. no

yeah it can just come off but in most cases its down to wrong fitting it must be fitted with closed end facing in the direction of the travel of the chain

Yup think his fitted it wrong in this case.

Also, drop the sump bolt, get all the oil out, clean the ally up nicely get it real clean, then get some de-greaser, then apply the JB weld if you're using that. Then leave to dry 24 hours, then give it another layer. Then leave another 24 hours. Then put the tranny oil in, lean the bike to the side it was on (the left so just leave it on the stand) wait about 12 hours or so, and look in your shed for oil patches. If there isn't any, you're good to ride. :)

(You can get an actual weld done, which would probably be more solid and lasting. Worse case scenario is switching the crank cases. no )

Also now you have an excuse to get D.I.D chain and sprockets. About £90 IIRC but top quality.

don't want to use my new engine really? don't want to strip this engine either lol... Only issue is if i use jbweld stuff... might have problems with the seal not fitting as tight?

what a bugger of a day!  good job i wasn't flat out!

Sorry to hear it mate. A broken chain, it could have been alot worse. If you were sitting in a hospital bed with horrific injuries you would look at a broken crankcase as laughable. Hard to see the positives whilst your still annoyed but its all you can do. Count you're lucky stars it was the bike that broke not you.

that's the end of me running split links.. Gonna pixk up a chain breaker and split the links that way now.

not as bad as I thought it would be ..

jubilee clip and repair  jb weld repair the clip may help if possible to close up the cracks and help the seal stay tight ?  just keep a eye on oil levels and check for leaks .

ha819.jpg

or as you say other option is off the road for a while to rebuild or replace engine

Personally I'd go down the new case route.

Easy enough to bag one off of eBay / someone off of here, place all back together. Just need new gaskets. And a new head gasket, no running in involved, just three heat cycles so the head gasket doesn't blow....

Although I'm a perfectionist and don't like JB weld etc on my engines...

Or you could get it welded up, but personally I wouldn't weld it with the engine all intact, I'd split the cases then take it in for welding....

Also I suspect the split link would have been fine, had it of been installed correctly. hmm Sorry to rub salt into the wound, but I honestly believe someone has installed the split link incorrectly or used a used one again. no

i agree i would have used the split link again and perhaps not installed correctly...

shall see if i can temp repair for now... then i will decide if i will install my freshly rebuilt spare engine in place.
or at least keep a hunt out for spare cheap case. been reading on other dirt bike forums and it can be a common thing... which people have managed to temp repair with a success. will keep you all updated

You don't need to remove the head so why a new gasket?

yeah to swap over i would not bother undoing head just the barrel and swap that way not disturbing top gasket :p but still would need to run in new engine as whole bottom end has been rebuilt and i cannot be bothered doing that. gonna hunt for left hand case aswell incase not viable to weld!

anyone know if the later cases from X/RE models will fit ??cheers

Thats one ive never seen before, the chains usually take a piece of casing off behind the clutch arm. The best one ive seen was a chain snap and the bike lost drive the kid nailed the throttle and wrapped chain round the front sprocket and fractured the case all down the clutch arm run. Just stick a new casing on it, its an hours job once the engine is out.

Electric start one is no good, its slightly wider as the crank is wider for the leccy start stuff.

quick one Scrim..whilst i have rebuilt my other engine- surely i dont have to remove all the gears etc/clutch basket in order to swap the left hand side case? I'm thinking i can just keep everything else attached and undo all stuff on left hand side?

obviuosly removing reeds and barrel :p

Yeah dont have to remove all the gears etc, if the bearings are good in the new casing your laughing you wont need to change them just bosh it back together.

I think cases are made in pairs,  machined to match

I'd deffo change the bearings if you're splitting the cases just for the fact you might damage them getting the crank out in the first place
