So posting on behalf of my brother really, for those who are interested. He loves his YZ, even though he's only used it a handful of times. It's actually because of this he is going down the road legal route. From what he's said it shouldn't be too much work. He only rides a couple of times a year so reliability isn't really an issue. He just needs to contact Yamaha to confirm the year, Insure the bike. Get it MOT'd then get a plate. I think that's all he needs to do. But for the moment he's just making it road legal.
He bought a conversion kit around £350 off eBay that is just lovely.
Full loom, Headlight (with a horn inside the headlight) Handle bar switch, new stator plate, banjo bolts and tail tidy. Along with instructions and all the bits and bobs needed to assemble it. Bargain really. All came neatly packaged ready to bolt on. Most of it is done. He just needs tyres. But he wants to supermoto it so is just waiting for the right wheels to crop up.
Anyway here are the photos.
So here is the bike when he got it last year...
I didn't get a photo of the stator plate. But I'll say this, It's exactly the same as standard bar one wire that has come off it for external power. That was all the eye could tell.
The rear tail
Does a better job routing the cables than me...
Nice use of a little rubber gromet.
Handle Bar mount
Banjo Switches
It's just ON at the moment. Not finished the routing here will probably be tidied. But Look for the horn already assembled.
Here is it as it stands. Still wants a stand for it, tyres and the rest of the mallarky.
Nice, its seams a lot easier to make crossers road legal now than it did 30 years ago, me and mates talked about it back then but there always was some problem or another, the gearing would need sorting or it will just scream its tits off.
PS I want that camper Calum

Aww yes my Dad's Split Screen Samba Bus. 99% Filler lol. He was a bit disappointed with how much filler was used. But Yes his pride and joy. Running I believe the 1.8 aircooled engine with twin Solex carbs. It is slow as shít but I suppose that is not the point. Be nice if he used it more than he does.
But yeah, I'm sure he'll run into problems but from the out line it seems relatively easy.
i blew my dt up ... but i fixed it.... Then i crashed it.... but i didnt fix it right and 2 scouser's come in the middle of the night and left me with a working bike
Personally, I wouldn't work on it on your front, or get the DT out as well. Just advertises it to thief's walking around / going around in car.
Even some of the nicest areas in Leicester are getting shook up by motorcycle theft. :(
A KTM 450 EXC stolen from Birstall (a relative nice area in Leicester) a little over two weeks ago. And he said he always cleaned and polished it on his front before packing it in his garage, not long later at 4AM he hears a loud motorbike going around, looks out of his window two scrotes with his helmets on are riding up the road on his beast. :|
Lol. Luke mate it's a dead end col de sac. The only reason you would walk down there is to go home. It's a real quiet neighbour hood.
I'm always dubious but I don't live there. That's my brothers yard. And there is more security to that bike than your average home. He can't get it out the garage unless I come. And even then you have to make a tremendous amount of noise lmao.
And then the final thing dude it's a beautiful day. And we wanted to enjoy the sunshine.
Aye know wat u mean spoked rims are nice. Should be able to get hold of a set no probs for yz's straight bolt on job with original spacers ect then all u need is an off the shelf caliper bracket for the bigger front disc
I have done this lots of times over the years. Make sure you declare it as an "enduro" when you register it then its exempt MSVA. All they do is measure the seat hight and ground clearence and the YZ will qualify as an enduro easily.

Dunno hard to say. Mines jacked up. The YZ is bigger than a standard dtr. But skinnier (it feels). And obviously massively lighter! Even this one is not a ally frame and it weighs hardly anything.
Also cheers scrin. I've forwarded that to him!

Is this a game of where's Wally, can see the bike and helmet but unless your standing behind the hill with your head in the helmet where are you, please don't say taking the pic lol
Well it's because it's so minimal. This model does not have the aluminium frame. However that said the swing arm is aluminium. The frame is kept to the bare minimum with, when compared to the dt, almost half the subframe is missing. If not more.
I bet its. culmination of a load of little things. Seats are smaller. Tank is plastic. No wiring loom. No stand. Aluminium used where appropriate. Thats just what you can ser by eye. As the photo shows the fly wheel is tiny. So I'd imagine it is weighted accordingly.
