do the top end and exhaust gasket clean the carb clean the filter maybe alter the sprockets my gasgas 250 was like this on a straight because it was geared for tourque alone not speed
Ive been playing with the sprocket ratios for years, got abit more speed but nothing much, matched my mates ratios and he still reggs off leaving me, definately an engine fault
Today i cleaned out the carb, blew the jets, cleanout out all the tubes for the fuel, took the tap off of the fuel tank cleaned out its filters and everything, cleaned out the fuel tank aswell, then took the airbox off, cleaned the air filter out and cleaned the airbox aswell, just making sure there is nothing at-all getting into the carb and blocking the jets... Put it all back together put the front section of the exhaust on left the silencer off, started it up in one kick went into the woods AND....
Runs better without a silencer, acts as a straight through or asif you've got a aftermarket silencer, loud as fack but its what the guys on the trials forum told me to do and it is abit faster without the silencer, didn't understand why really as 2 strokes need back pressure but there you go
Hmmm. The only time running it without a silencer will increase the power is if your silencer needs repacking. Can buy some from eBay or use loft insulation (handle it with gloves or it aggravates your skin and makes you itchy.)
Then just tie it around it and apply something like a bit of metal wire around it to hold it in place.
Is there anything that could block up a bit of air? I put my alarm on the DT over the air box snorkle hole and it ran like rubbish and wouldn't rev much. As did a bad silencer.
When you took the expanny off, did you get a rod and push it through the little gap going to the silencer? Usually rubbish gets stuck in there. I clean mine with petrol, cover both exits and then shake it around, then a rod through the end bit in case of blockages.
The air ways are totally clear checked, petrol in the expanny shook it around then lit the fkin thing and roasted it on the bbq, burnt any residue out in there
Not sure how to check for air leaks? If its just the box and where it attaches to the carb its ok
Its so low on power that i cant imagine it was something like that, seriously slow, but it seems to of started getting slower and slower through the years, weren't like a sudden thing
Nah just the top end. Unless it sounds like a bag of nails and/or it's got too much play in it.
Put it this way stop being trashed and just do it yourself and save yourself £££
Or pay a mechanic to do it. At the end of the day a bike like that it's just the nature of it. Needs to be done and actually wouldn't cost you too much.
NORFE on here does lots of engines for a decent price. Could always contact him
Wouldn't really bother with NORFE for just a topend rebuild. If it was a bottom end I'd take it to him, but the topend is too easy to warrant sending a engine off to him, a local shop will fix it for about £100-£200. Then throw on some labour costs. If you can drive you could probably drive it down to NORFE, his near Sheffield. The option I've always taken, would ask him first though. Probably cost you less in petrol than it would to post the whole engine off to him. :)
Send us some pictures of the engine and we'll assist you to getting the topend off. I assume you have a van / trailer to transport the bike? If you can strip it down and get it ready for the topend replacement, it'll be cheaper on mechanic labour. Or even better yet, some of the guys from here could assist you in doing it yourself? :)
Always stick tissue down the bottom end once you take the topend off, stops spiders and any other dirt getting into the bottom end and ruining it when you start it again. :)
Is it a old air cooled engine? If so, even easier to do topend rebuilds on.

Its an 1988 air cooled yeh, i would probably have a crack at it myself, just aslong as stuff dont come flying out of it when i take it apart!! Obviously i would need abit of guidance and thanks for all your inputs so far, when i get the time and composure i will make a new topic and we'll go from there
Don't scrap it... I'm sure the bikes have a good fan base on trials forums. Could get a sale on it quite easily. But obviously won't get as much as a perfectly running one.
Really isn't much to the topend really. Just clips and rings then good to go as long as they're the right way around. And of course a head gasket. Although probably not as bad as putting a water cooled one on.
I'm sure everyone here will help out as much as they can as well.
Also, is it the correct spark plug for the bike? If you put the wrong code in it can mess it up as well, although it'd probably just be boggy and flood regular.
Spark plugs ok, yeh cheers i will do it at some point, im faster around the woods on that than i'am on my motocross bike, so agile and the engine (when working) has got so much torque you could come to an almost stop in 3rd and then pull away in 3rd without even touching the clutch... Awesome bike, better than the new trials bikes where you cant even sit down!! Long that, get to a rutt your facked or just extremely slow
But then trials aren't built for anything i want to!! Haha just look like some yob riding an old tattered bike with no rear mud guard and a ronnie mac style one going on on the front!!
