Screaming at 65mph

Think I have the same problem as akaTheif, I have a 2003 DTR. It has standard sprockets 16T/57T. But for what ever reason in 6th gear I am at redline @65mph.

Does anyone know why my gearing ratio's might be ****Ęd up so much? did anyone sell any "racing gearing" back in the day for the DT? etc?

Plus I cant be sure the engine which is in the bike is the engine it rolled off the factory with, did DT's at different times have different ratios?

Not that i'm aware of mate. Standard gearing through 89-2007. Unless Scrim wants to correct me.

Just put a bigger sprocket on the front mate. If you say power isn't a problem then just go up a tooth on the sprocket.

Fixed it! Finally! seems from 99 ish onwards the final drive was a diffrent ratio, to fix this I changed from a 16t/57t sprokets to 17t/55T. I hit 70mph for the first time today :D felt like breaking the sound barrier!

How did you find out what ratio it was??
I thought it was supposed to be 16/57 sprockets as standard.

Not for the early DT's. Seems it was 17T /55T as the standard. The primary drive is the same and so is the gear box but the final drive is the diffrence. Although if you work out the ratios from that it is different compared to the Haynes manual. I think they made a typo

Oh and btw I'm not sticking to that configuration. Seems it's abit hard on the first gear. I mean it go's it just takes a sec or so for first gear to reach the power band so getting away at the lights is a pain. I'm probably going to go with a 17t front and a 57t rear

I'm not aware of any difference in ratios throughout the years 1989-2007 Scrim would know if he sees this he can confirm deny.

Me either... maybe your clutch is slipping or bad compression or something.

I've never seen redline on my DT's in 6th unless I'm on 14-57 or lower.

p.s My bike will hit 70 mph on this gearing too, at the redline though.
