Leaking Petrol With Petrol Tap Off Overnight
Permalink

Hi all. The DT is leaking petrol at night when I leave it in the shed. It seems to be on the L/H side where the fuel tank pipe to the carb is, I'm guessing it's somewhere around that area.

It's absolutely fine when it's running and riding. It just appears to be doing it at night. Also the chain has got some petrol on, but that could be from when I've pulled the pipe off to remove the tank.

Someone's suggested it might be the seals/gaskets in the carb, but it doesn't appear to leak anything in the carb area, more near the petrol tank. Open to ideas.

Sure it's fuel and not gearbox Oil?

Yeah, put some tissue down, definitely petrol mixed with something. It's coming from the L/H near the chain. I think the chain was over lubricated. The oil level is full when the engine is cold as well, when started it's empty and circulating the engine.

It goes without saying where the problems are going to lie.

It's not unheard of for the fuel tank tap to go. Rebuild kits can be found on wemoto. So it's worth having a look there. Should be fairly obvious. Fuel pipes, from the tank and overflow. Could it be the float stopped working causing fuel to come out the overflow. Wouldn't happen when the fuel is flowing but when left still it will.

For the time it takes, I'd investigate the TAP and if not that then have a look at the overflow.

had many that would leak from carb over flow over night adjusting the floats is a easy fix ..

put sheets of news paper in diff areas over night to try spot where its coming from sheet under engine - under carb - under fuel tap etc etc

I would guess overflow too. If it was leaking from anywhere but the carb ( petrol i mean) then you'd empty the tank over night i expect. The carb will only empty til the level gets below which would explain why its only a bit.

Whats making you say its leaking from near the petrol tap?
