Hello,


I recently bought a brand new Yamaha DT125X .  I know it's not a DT125R but I thought it would be okay to post my questions on this website .  You can see a picture of my DT125X on my website:

I'm quite new to motorbiking and as such the DT125X is my first motorbike.


My first question is about DEP pipes.  I see a lot of websites making references to DEP systems but I can't find any information on how they work.  I assume a DEP system gives more power and speed, but how does it do it?  Are there any disadvantages to a DEP system?


Is it reletively straight forward to fit a DEP system?  I guess it's just a case of disconnecting the current exhaust and then putting the DEP system on.  Is it really that simple?


This website shows alternatives to the DEP system (BigOne, Gianelli, Nikkon).  Does anyone think these alternative systems are better than the DEP system?

I wouldn't say there's any disadvantages to fitting a DEP system, but you would get less miles-per-gallon (my bike does about 50MPG with normal riding, could get higher if i rode at lower revs).


The official fuel consumption figures for DT's are for the bike in restricted form. (Then again, people don't buy two-stroke's for economy do they )


The DEP front pipe gives that "tinny" sound when the powerband kicks in.


If you want the DEP front pipe to stay shiny then i would recommended that you spray it with "heat-proof laquer". Otherwise after a few months of getting rained on, it will get rust appear on the surface (even though the pipe is nickel plated). "Autosol metal polish" helps remove the rust.


It should be simple to change the exhaust system, but i've read that when you remove the standard exhaust it leaves a hole in the airbox (where a pipe from the exhaust went) This would need blocking.


I'm not sure if the tailpipes from the other exhausts (BigOne, Gianelli, Nikkon) will fit the newer model DT's.


I don't know the power information for the other exhausts, (I haven't found it yet).

I passed the 2-year 33bhp restricted test on the 12/08/2004, so in less than 6 months i'll be able to ride any size bike.


I was originally planning to do my bike test back in 2000 (i'm 23) but after i had a bike lesson, the instructor told me that i needed to practice a few things, after that i felt a bit de-moralised and didn't get round to taking any more lessons at the time. Plus i was getting a bit fed-up with getting soaked and cold in the winter, so i started taking Driving lessons that autumn.


After i'd had my car licence for 18 months i was getting a bit bored of just driving a car around, (not as fun ), so in the autumn of 2002 i did my CBT (for the second time). Then i needed to find another bike, which took me about 7 weeks, and i finally ended up buying a Honda NSR125 (which was a bit tatty looking but went ok). Then after 6 months (July 2003) i decided i wasn't too keen on the riding position or it looking tatty, so i got rid of that and in October 2003 i put a wanted advert in the "Adtrader" and i got my first DTR125 for £740 (G-reg). Then i did several miles on this bike into the summer of 2004, and by this time i realised i only had until November 2004 to pass my bike test or my CBT would run-out again.


So i passed the theory test in June and managed to pass my (33bhp limited) bike test in August. Thankfully i passed them both first time.


Now i knew i could have a bigger bike up to 33bhp, i just felt the need to get one, that's why i ended up getting the TTR250. It was a nice bike but i had a couple of engine problems during the time that i had it. One of the problems required me to take the engine out, and i was getting annoyed with it at the time, so i thought back about my old trusty machine (my old DTR). I kinda missed my old DTR, so while my TTR250 still needed fixing (to sell), i went out and bought my current mount (52-reg DTR).


No doubt, when August comes i'll probably feel the urge to get something bigger (like a 400 to 650 trail bike), but who knows. A bigger 2-stroke trail bike would also be nice, but they're quite thirsty, (i've read somewhere that a Honda CRM 250 does about 25mpg!!).


If i get a bigger bike, i'll probably regret selling a DTR again. If i had plenty of space i would probably just keep all my previous bikes, (but i don't), its a pity cos i'd like to have a trail bike and a road bike if i had the space.


(I still plan to keep this website going even if i do sell my DTR in the future)
