Hello guys, new to this forum :) not sure if there is anywhere to have an introduction, had a quick looky but found nothing.
So please point me in the right direction if there is.
Well here is my first ever project, bought myself a 1990 DTR frame. My plan is to convert it into a supermoto (may not happen considering DTX wheels are hard to find) have it with a white powdercoated frame, swingarm and fork legs.
then maybe have a secondary colour of red or blue, undecided yet. Well here goes
Starting off with a poorly painted frame by the previous owner, apparently it was one of his projects which he gave up with after being unable to find a wiring loom and needing money to get a new engine for his car as his current one had shat itself. Amazing how you can post something so large from London to South East Wales for only £15!!!
Even got the frame numbers on it
Hint: Old microwaves work really good to set the frame on
Also bagged myself a swingarm with the chain guide and brake cover. A quick test fit to make sure that the swing arm fits correctly
All fits good Swingarm bearings are however crusty... Very very crusty. After inspecting them i found out why, seems like instead of selling me just the swingarm, chain guide and brake cover he also wanted to chuck in some extra soil samples
So a big clean of the swingarm is needed, have already started getting all of the mud off of it and cleaning it up a little bit.Don't have a picture of it yet but it's still not pretty.Needs a good sandblast and lick of paint.
Also decided to get all of the bolts that hold on the rear grab handle, some of the bolts had already been snapped so i tried to cut a slot in them and undo it with a flat head screwdriver.. this didn't work.
The bolt is too skinny to accept enough force, just snapped off. I then swiftly realised that the previous owner had painted the frame without taking any of the screws out... then left the bike out in the elements for a good 3 years (MOT expired that time).
So none of these bolts are coming out. My best bet now is to drill and retap the threads. Any recomendations for a good drill and tap set? Seems like this project is going to involve alot of money spent on tools aswell..

Did you get a v5 with that frame mate. Numbers look a little won key which is always suspect.
Those Swing arm bearings will want replacing which can be costly. But should be a nice project.
Dec wheels are easy enough to come across. Depending how adventurous you're feeling there are a few other options you can choose. I'm using Aprilia rs 125 wheels but there are plenty to choose from.
Hello, i didn't get a v5. But when i did a registration check i also was able to check the vin against records. It came back correct for the reg. I was hoping i could get them out and maybe soak them in something then regrease. But seeing as it may be the only time it's apart i should probably replace them. Whats the best way of getting them out? I spent a good 20 mintues trying to get them out with a flathead and a hammer. At the moment im not feeling tok adventurous with the wheels. Ideally I'd want something that would be a direct fit, or i could easily get the parts to make them fit
looks good. remember that the yamaha wr 125 wheels are the same and bolt right on. they are saxxes rather then excel thats the only difference. i had few sm dtrs and one had dtx wheels another aprilia rs wheels than a wr125 wheels onto another 2 dts with derbi senda 125 wheels. so really its plenty to choose from but the dtx or wr wheels are the easiest swap. also if you need i do have two sets of dtr forks that i was planing to send on ebay this week so if you need them let me know before i open an auction
So I decided to do some more work on the swingarm. Just removing bearings and bushings from the swing arm, actually turned out to be quite a hard job.
So these are the swingarm bearings, these actually didn't turn out to be too hard to change. A few hits from a hammer with the aid of a spark plug socket to hit on the edge of the bearing and they came free
Reusing these bearings is out of the question, but i planned to change every bearing whilst it was apart anyway. That's the point of rebuilding a bike right?
Now came the fun part of this evening, removing these bushes. I had previously tried to get these out with a screwdriver and hammer. But no luck.
So back refueled and with a little google knowledge i had a new plan of attack
Instead of just trying to straight hit them with a screwdriver and hope they get pushed out, i found out that you have to actually split the bush in half so it releases
the tension of the bush pushing up against the swingarm. So after cutting a slot with a hacksaw blade and mauling it with a screwdriver i finally got the bushes out.
So the hydraulic press at college is going to come in handy if they let me use... so will the sandblaster
Sorry this one wasn't exactly too interesting, but that will come when i get paid... at the end of this month
Again i thought i'd give a small update, and maybe ask for some advice... All i've been doing recently is hoarding in some parts for this project. So far I've got some forks, wiring loom, regulator and headlight bracket. My main concern is what model this loom came from, it's a 3RM-82590-20 wiring loom. I know it's off of a 1996 German bike, but i'm unsure on what cdi to use with it and what wiring diagram it comes with, everything fits the 1989-1998 loom diagram in the loom section apart from the indicator relay which has 3 spades instead of 2. I haven't looked at the CDI wires yet but i'm going to check them now. Any help with this would be appreciated.
Edit: also i hope to have some more updates for you next week, half term and payday!!!
Edit: Okay looked at the wiring loom and can confirm it uses the same cdi as 1989-1998. But why does the relay have ground whilst others don't?

So not too much has happened after half term and payday, i thought i would knuckle down and get things done...
Then I realized I need to have all of the parts in front of me to start working on them.
So parts hoarding has continued, I'm hoping to have it powdercoated next month however that is my final pay before Christmas so I'm hoping Christmas isn't going to cost me too much this year.
So here's what photos i do have to show what i've been doing
My wiring loom from Germany, i was also sent the rectifier/regulator and headlight bracket with this
Received my yokes and forks so tried em, seeing bits go onto it really motivates me
Also cleaned up the suspension linkage i had received. It seems that every part I get is filthy and needs a good clean.
I have also now got the engine brackets and bolts. I've also won an auction on eBay for a radiator, 2stroke tank and coolant expansion bottle with all brackets, the scoops and hoses for a measly £1.25
just waiting on him to send it.
My Dad is going to take the frame into work with him to get the snapped bolts out of the frame, I've tried penetrating oil + mole grips however i had literally now success. I also got the lower bearing race off of the yoke thanks to my college
and their fancy head inductor thing.
Next Is to strip down the forks as the seals are gone and i need just the fork legs to give to the powdercoaters.
Also the brother decided to park his GSXR in the shed for winter, so i've got less space in a tiny shed

Thankyou, however it'll never be as nice as any of the bikes that you've done. I thought that the seller wasn't going to send them as I had literally stolen them off of him
Hey I don't know about that but thanks anyway they are nice however people build them, I like mine to look original and I wont even look at one that's newer than a R reg but that's just me im an old fart stuck in my ways thinking im still 18. But there has been some really nice modified ones built on here much newer than any of mine. Its a case of everyone to there own on what they want and like I appreciate what goes into them all. I just like to see them started from the frame up its great.
They do indeed look like they were done by a drunk russian, but the actual sticker from the factory (can see the white at the front) is the correct one. I believe it's a stolen/recovered. When i checked it said it had been stolen in 2003
oh I see .. maybe the case the owner tried to restamp it after he got it back if theifs ground them off ...
good tip if ever restamping put two strips of tape over where you intend to stamp stops the bounce and leves a good indent to get stamp back in same position if need be also to draw a marker pen line down to follow the line streight ...
if all else fails you can buy a block that holds all number stamps together
Yeah you need it restamping for the mot, my mates 02 reg has been stolen twice and restamped twice ! as the fools always leave the engine number on it always comes home luckily ..................
I've got to restamp it for the mot just because they're a bit on the wonk? I'm honestly not surprised that it had been stolen before, it wouldn't be a DT if it wasn't stolen at least once in its life
nice project u got going there , sort of thing im on the look out for or might just buy a whole bike then got all the bits will have to see how money goes wont be this year now to close to Christmas ,,,,
I wouldn't say it's nice, it's just a pile of bits at the moment. There was a job lot on ebay the other day which i thought was a good start for a dt project. But I would probably recommend starting with a complete bike that's a bit tatty, it's annoying that i can't do anything to this bike whilst waiting to be paid
I'd love to switch between the two, finding sm forks, brakes and wheels doesn't seem to come cheap anymore. Still a possibility for the future, but i'll finish it in "enduro" mode first. Pretty much the same as what NEV? did with his green and black DT. Are they really 17 inch knobblies? might stick some on my baby cbr!
Hmm, I think NEV only has the green one in SM set up, but I ain't too sure on that.
As for DTX SM wheels about £250-£300 is about right. Anything more they're dreaming. I got mine for £250 off Ralzy, minus the front brake caliper which was £20 off eBay from a RZF125. Then a bracket made up for about £5.
Just double checked, he put that supermoto was his second stage of the project. Would get a picture of it before supermoto but imageshack likes to delete old photos. Ruined so many build threads -_-. Hmm i'd love to spend £250 on wheels, but just getting the bike this far has knackered my bank account. However i did see some joker trying to sell a pair of dtx wheels for £400 on ebay
You could get a set of standard hubs rebuilt on brand new sm rims for about 350 quid not excel,s but not garbage neither then you can use the standard front calliper and disc
