Evening all, I've been lurking here for a while and taking a look round, ready for when I got my new bike home. Well, it's here now and while I'm pretty sure it isn't 1998 as it's log book says, I can't make out exactly what year it is or where it came from originally. E.g. it wouldn't surprise me if it was a grey import as I bought it from the Isle of Man and they do pretty well what they like. Which is nice.

Anyway what I do know is the frame number is 3MD0196**, it has no powervalve servo, seems very original and the mileage looks genuine at less than 8,000mls (It has an MPH speedo so I suppose that could have been swapped if/when imported)

I thought I'd seen a page here for researching frame numbers and models etc but can't find it now. If you can give me a clue or two that would be nice as well! I will post some pics soon, I need to do some work now to pay for the bike....Cheers Steve

P.S. If you think the user name is a bit odd, well yes it is. It was a mistype by me, I meant to use my nickname-Herrflick, but that might not mean much either-sorry!

Welcome buddy. You've come to a good site here lots of information about these bikes.

I'm sure Scrimustang will help you with what actual year your bike is. They're pretty standard throughout though matey. from 1989 - 2003 parts should all fit. Only subtle differneces mainly in styling. Engine wise parts can be used from 1989-2007 with the only real difference being the starter motor and electrics from 2004-07. Parts are pretty different from those years but things like, swing arms, forks can be gained from any year from 1989-2007.

Lots of interesting builds here and it's always nice to have someone new. If you're looking to start a project then head over to the project section and open up a new thread. But I'm guessing this is an intro.

If you need any help then put it in the relevant section and someone will see it. If I don't reply then I've probably looked and not had a clue what you're after haha!

When you can sticks some photos up. Most of use use photobucket and link the photos in but this site does have minimal hosting services for photos. But for a project best use photobucket for more reliability.

Thanks for the welcome Calum. I will do some pics soon. The bike has been standing on the seafront for 6 months or more and the sea water has got at it! It wouldn't take much to get it rideable but I want to deal with the rust then rebuild it to use as a commuter and occasional green-laner. So not sure about listing it as a project as it's more of a 'preserve and use' job than 'pimp my ride' etc! I will be looking for a power valve servo kit though of course.

What's with the font size fluctuation? I only had one Becks!

Lol. Nah that sounds like a project to me, I class anything that makes it yours a project. You should have a look at Scrims restorations. Some of the stuff you wouldn't believe is the same bike. I'll get an example.

Welcome to the forums. :) If you need any help throughout your build, don't forget to ask here. A very helpful bunch on here.

Also, when you remove the engine be very careful with the swing arm/pivot bolt going through the swing arm and the engine. They're extremely easy to strip the threads off of. About £40 to be re-threaded at a engineer place, and about £60-£70 for a brand new one from Yamaha, which are usually on a back order so 2-4 weeks wait. Also, don't forget to take lots and lots of pictures of how everything went before removing it. I found that a handy lesson to me when I was putting mine back together.

So, did you just buy the bike from the IOM or do you live there? :)

Also throw up some pictures of your project. We love pictures. :)

Yep you're right there Calum, I have a had a look at some of them during my lurking phase. They really are crackers too.

Thanks for the welcomes and encouragement from the others too. To answer a couple of queries, I don't come from or live on the IoM, I just wish I did! I was over there in August for the Manx Grand Prix and saw this DT parked near our digs. The owner had been meaning to take his test, never got around to it and just stopped using it for some reason I forget. Then he lost his rented garage  and instead of findind a mate to store it for him, just parked it on the bloody promenade in Peel! It was there for about six months till I saw it. No chains locks or even steering lock. You could only do that on the IoM and still expect it to be there...So I did a deal and went over again for another weeks holiday last week and rescued it. Have been spraying it with penetrating oil ever since in prep for the refurbishment. Most things are freeing off already, the front brake lever pivot is solid on the bolt, still trying to avoid drilling it out if I can.

Waffled on a bit now, maybe not the right forum for what sounds like a 'project' posting! I will behave and conform immediately-Pics some time in the next few days.

Thanks Connor, that confirms what I thought and suits me too as I want to add it to my existing insurance-the older the better!
