Just a quick note to anyone buying a bike on the internet........
I bought a rough 97 R reg DT125R on the internet a few months back for a future project, all the frame and engine numbers and reg number where there and all original and all appeared well. I got it home stripped it down threw away what I didn't want all the old plastics, brake pads, chain etc and boxed the rest of it all up and forgot about it. I didn't get a logbook so send off to DVLA for a new one and thought no more about it, I recently got a letter back from DVLA and to my surprise they said that the bike had been scrapped and a certificate of destruction was issued by a DVLA licenced vehicle recycling yard in 2012.... !
I rang DVLA and they have asked me to send them pictures of the frame number engine number reg plate and speedo. I have sent the pictures and am just waiting for a reply now. I asked on the phone how the bike could have made it out of the recycling yard as they are supposed to be crushed once a certificate of destruction has been issued ! They have no idea as to how this could have happened so I guess someone who works there is going to be in trouble as the bike definitely has not been crushed if I have it here. The person I got it from cant remember the name or phone number of the person they got it from..........
Anyway if you are going to be buying a bike from anywhere its always an idea to get it checked out even if everything seems fine as its sometimes not as ive found out........
seen many cases where trucks full of bikes never make it to the yards ..
I even know one bloke who had the job of drive the truck full of bikes to a scrap yard and many times maybe 10 running bikes did not get there and changed hads for field bikes .
the police do not take care of transport the bikes they call in any recovery firm to do so . and we all know any tom dick or harry with a recovery truck these days as a waste removal licence .

Yeah I can see that happening with bikes like these ending up as "out the back door field bikes" not expecting anyone to try and put them back on the road. From what I can make out this one had nothing to do with the police it was just taken for scrap by the owner as an mot failure, all the lights and reg plate etc where with it when I got it, it was just in a very sorry rusty unmaintained condition. Run into the ground as they say.
If the insurance has already paid out they won't let it go back on the road if it was taken for scrap like you say then the scrap marker can be removed
No you cant have or I would have known, you checked the frame numbers with no reg number Dan. I had the reg number and frame number so thought nothing of it. Its R37 NGC for what its worth mate.
so whats your next move any way to claim money back of seller ? or even get the bike re registerd or un registerd as scrapped ?
Ile just bust it up for spares if they wont let it back on the road, not much chance of getting the money back I would think. Dan thinks the scrapped marker can be removed so hopefully that's what happens.
Woyld u boys know how to check if a bikes been stolen. Theres an xl125 i want to get but all i got is a frame number to go on. Hes got no v5 or reg number. Id like to get it back on the road but not sure how to cjeck if its all ok first!
This is the frame number L185s-5101738. Its got me thinking it might of started out as an xl185s lol
None at all, I sent them everything they asked for and im still waiting to hear back from them. I was over 2 months after I sent for the logbook till they sent me the letter saying it was scrapped so im thinking it might take them that long to decide if I can have the logbook. I cant see the problem as it cant be scrapped if I have it here. I wouldn't hope for a quick decision though as they are definitely not to fast at sorting stuff out, I suppose they have to make some enquires with the previous recorded keeper and the yard that issued the certificate of destruction to find out how it was not destroyed after they issued the certificate I suppose.
The COD can only be issued by a scrapyard. Something's fishy. Maybe it's been rung and they've done a good job at it? Friend had one and they wrote number before scrapping etc?

The COD was issued by a scrapyard. Its definitely not a ringer ive had more of these than ive had hot dinners if its a restamped number ile eat the frame lol, vin label is still on it as well with matching vin number.
The only thing fishy is someone at the scrapyard has sneaked it out the back door for a bit of pocket money not expecting it to go back on the road...........
from what i have found out is that it might be possible to put it back on the road all they need is a VIC check to ensure the engine and frame matches and its not a ringer but i guess it varies from vehicle to vehicle, but well we will see
Looks like I should get the logbook in the end after reading that still not heard nothing from them still though, if they want to check it over though I hope they don't mind checking a stack of bits as that's what it is now lol...............
If you aren't far from the DVLA headquarters, I'd just pop in and explain there. I think the DVLA will be trying to contact the said scrapyard.
And if it isn't a ringer, I'm sure you shouldn't have any problems.
Also, don't forget you can check vehicles on the DVLA website, if they don't come back they're scrapped. (vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk) Need the make and registration though.
I checked it on there before I even bought it and it came up straight away, so it seems they do come up on there even if they are scrapped. Dan has checked it out and it was marked as scrapped in 2012. Like I said ive spoke to the fella at DVLA dealing with it on the phone and DVLA now have all the info they asked me for so its just waiting on them now. It will be a shame if they wont allow it as I had plans to use all my Pastel Mineral Blue and White nos parts on it.

Got a letter back today from DVLA, I can have the logbook for it as soon as the bike is put back together and they can give it a quick inspection of the frame and engine numbers so all is well that ends well......................
