I was thinking about getting an rm250, but i've heard from some of my mates 2stroke crossers always have issues and often go wrong, and require high maintanence...
you know i ride a kx250f, if i do the maintenance like i do on that on a 250 2stroke which one will ultimately last longer and cost less? I only ask because i know there are 2stroke hot heads on here that have been very helpful in the past
A well maintained 4 stroke theoretically will go on and on. But maintenance will become meticulous and unless you do it yourself, costly. I know you said you don't really like getting your hands dirty. You know I'm a two stroke lover. I've only ridden two strokes for crossing, my mates say the 4 stroke makes easy work of the track. So my question is what are you riding For? To get get or for Fun? If you want to get good then start on a smoker, if you want an easy life and fun stick with the 4 stroke.
Maintenance my ass! Had 109 hours on my KTM before I rebuilt it and the piston still looked in good nick. Obviously you know I don't keep it pinned round the whole track but I doubt you will either!
Well my 250f lasted 2 years before i had to get it rebuilt
In terms of maintenace i mean, oil change, air filter etc
I just feel like i want abit more power, but i dont want a sloppy 450
Sloppy 450? They eat up the track! A proper mx 450 is a ruthless machine. I'm two stroke all the way but i appreciate a good engine no matter how it is made.
I put 3 piston kits in my 2007 RM125 in just over 3 years and it never missed a beat and got the s**t kicked out of it everywhere. The 2011 KTM 250XC 2stroke ive got now is still on its original piston n rings but its only done less than 20hrs hard trail riding from new. The modern 4 bangers seem pretty reliable with regular oil changes and valve clearence checks these days. Mind you im still 2strokes all the way, my 250XC will give any 450 a run for its money
I ride a 450 often and i just dont like the way they sound like they are poodling round but they're actually ripping, now a 125 sound like they are going really fast but their not, a 250f yes very good bike but i feel i want more power... A nice light rm 250 2 with gold series expansion chamber, i likey allot very tempted
Them 250 2's dont sound like your going anywhere unless your really quick, atleast on the 250f i can hit the limiter so it sounds like im going quick ha
You guys know what the power difference would be like going from the 250 4 to 2? Got a feeling its gonna rip my arms off and have abit to much power for me, or isit quite an easy bike to overcome anyone here got opinions on it
Na the 125's are tame and manageable, having the wrong stance will cause them to wheelie, unless ofcourse you are trying to wheelie
Apparently the 4strokes handle better and carve throught the track as appose to the lighter 2 strokes getting bashed about more? This is more mx based, i just dont know what to do there's nothing wrong with my 250f really maybe im just getting bored of its perfection
Im suprised at how expensive they are; your basically not going to get a decent one for under £2000, im guessing its because they dont make the rm or kx's anymore, there the ones i want
Just go for it. If you don't like it you can always sell it and get another. Just make sure you aren't paying over the odds for it, or you won't get that price back.
I bet you had all the same thoughts etc the first time you put your leg over the KXF. :)
Yeh true luke, only problem is liam will know about this, on your own bike over the years you do so much sh*t to customize it to yourself, i' ve got zeta top triple clamp; this allows me to fix the handlebars further forward and upward really opened up the bike, combine that with fastway footpegs which are wide and the only footpeg that gives you the adjustability to move them down 1/2 inch and back 1/2 inch, then i've got the high seat fitted aswell; this combo really opens up the ****pit and makes it more comfortable for a 6'3 guy like me
Then you know all the work carried out, linkages greased, shock serviced, shock gas chamber thing re-gased, forks serviced with new seals, engine topend rebuilt, brand new clutch, suspension tweaked for my weight and riding style by race spec with the correct springs, valves just checked, all bearings ok...
The rm i want is £2395 from a dealer, i rang them up they say they start at the front of the bike and work there way back, replacing any parts that need it, then run a compression test, ride it for abit if everything seems ok then they give it a clean and it goes up for sale
They dont know when it was last rebuilt or how many hours its done, they dont know what kind of maintainence was carried out on it, dont know what suspension set-up its running...
And i cant convert my sh*t onto the rm because none of it will fit, so your looking at £500-700 on top of what you buy it for anyway
Im hoping i can take some stuff off of my kxf though, will have to do abit of research
Ultimately thats life. My mate just paid top dollar for a kx450f and did a few race weekends and it seized. Was fine when he bought it and now its broke. Just pay the money fix it and enjoy it. It's a hobby at the end of the day so money shouldn't be an issue.
Service history means squat on a track bike. They get battered anyway from day one. So all you can do is get your hands dirty and have a look when you've got it home. If it needs a rebuild then pay the £200 for a rebuild. Then you have a sweet motor. I find if you're crossing then it's good to fettle with the bikes so you know the basics. But you don't like mechanics so then the only other seeable option is buy a miny crosser that guarantees you no problems. And to my mind the only one I can see of that is a new one.
Either be prepared to buy a bike that will one day fail. And either fix it yourself or have someone else do it. But be prepared.
Or go all out on a new one and get some sort of warranty. Not sure how applicable yhat is for track bikes.
You don't get a warranty with new competition bikes, ive bought quite a few brand new ones. In the last 10 years ive had new 04 YZ250, 07 RM125, 10 WR300 and an 11 XC250 that I still have and none of them came with warranty.
Yeh it can go both ways, i bought my kx250f 09 back in 2012, won it on ebay £1500, real cheap but i knew nothing about the dangers of buying a used crosser, probably why no-one bid on it because it was a guy saying he's selling it for a mate and that was it, that was all that was on the advert
Won the bid, went there it was on some ****ty council estate, like a proper ****ty one, went round the back it was outside locked in a container, 7:30 in the morning the geezer started it up and whacked it on the limiter straight away to show that it worked, my dad rode it the the fence about 5m away and back, and that was that
I had that bike 2 years riding every weekend, no problems at-all then just had a rebuild now, use to start first kick every time. Luck of the draw i spose, as you say your mate bought a nice one only for it to sieze up
I want a 2 aswell because they are cheaper to fix, and the 250 2 just sounds lush
Do you think i would be able to get parts for it easy enough?
Yeah you have to put a lot into it to make it your own, you need your suspension setting up for yor weight etc I needed to get a brick for my bike when on the gate because I was short haha I had the zeta pegs and asv levers on my kxf250 had all sorts on it!

Considering the last one built was the 2007 K7 he,s bull ****ting straight away unless he means it was sold new old stock in 2009 from new. Does look a nice bike but they all do with a jet wash and new plastics. As for the rest its all typical stuff the pipe etc, you would need to see receipts for the engine tuning and work.
Chuck 3750 my way and I will sell you my 2011 KTM XC 250, done 20 od hrs from new 250 od miles on the trailtech, its road registered with a lighting kit on an 11 plate ive had it from new.
