Sebamax...are the sxv 550s as bad as people make them out to be to maintain?

All I know it's what people say about them. I'm sure they are amaizing bikes but come with alot of trouble. But if you spend 5k on a 690 smcr . You have got preatty much same power as the 550 with loads less problems so it's kind of an obvious choice. I had a friend with the aprilia he didn't ride it much he said it was an animal and I suppose it was much faster than the 690 but the first thing he did was replace everything in the engine with 2010 parts as that's about when they got reliable . So if you gonna go for one look for one from that year onward or one that had the work done alredy

Thanks dude. Been reasearching and speaking to a few owners on the aprilia forum...everyone suggested to get the 2008 upwards, and just keep on top of oil changes...every 500ish miles. Its meant to be a full on track beast though, but some crazy mofos actually use them to commute daily.
They said it should be more than reliable for what i need it for...weekend warrior.

The sensible side of me says to get the smc, but the crazy yolo side is more swayed towards the 550. The noise that thing makes is soooo sweet.

Hahah yea I know what you mean but yea for a weekend warrior the sxv is perfect. The 690 is sensible . But than thinking the smcr vs the 550 how much difference is there really ? They are both animals but the 690 is trouble free

After reading more into the sxv it seems to be a bit more of an animal than the 690 but than its still super expensive and hard work to mantain

They come up quite cheap...well cheaper than the 690, but thats for the 2006/7 model. Theres one for sale on gumtree at the moment, fsh etc, but I'm sure I would have to factor in an extra £1000 to send it off the Cal to check out the engine and reseal it. (still not bad for £3500 otr) He seems to be be theeee SXV Guru in the UK, that gets these bikes to run reliably. If I could get hold of one that had already been rebuilt by him, I would be on to a winner :)

One of the issues with the earlier models is the way the engine was sealed...if it is orange sealant, they had issues with coolant and oil mixing...if its a black sealant...you're good to go.
Sorry mate...not the best explanation, but I'm sure you or the more mechanically minded dudes on here would understand if you read up on it. I'll try and find a thread and show ya!

I know what you are talking about as I was always in l9ve with the sxv but it's just not practical for my use. Right now I'm doing about 1k miles a month and I don't even commute . So in the past 2 months I have my ktm I wouldhave had to service the sxv around 4 times. As for the ktm I have still got 1k to go before service. I love te sxv but In my case It would be servicing it weekly or not using it as often as I would like to

I see your point. The sxv would be spanking you in servicing bills. I only do about 30-40 miles a week max...Only ride on dry weekends, so I think I can take the risk and get one.

Yea if only do that much miles than might aswell. But why so little ? A bike like this deserves to be ridden . The other week on my xj6 I did close to 600 miles in 3 days just went down the sea side etc. But 40 miles it's like taking it to a shop and back couple days a week. Bare in mind once you get the sxv you will want to ride it more . And meet some supermoto people you will be out and about piping wheelies etc going on twisties to mess with supersports

I've got a tdi as my daily work horse, a td04 starlet turbo as my weekend toy and I only ride when its dry at weekends....which isnt a lot up here in sunny Manchester lol.

I've only done about 150 miles on the mx since I got it back in December :-0.

I'd love to get out and ride more with some supermoto dudes (Gets boring riding with supersports dudes as they're all about straight line speed), but there doesn't seem to be any local to me....Most of the local mx riders - role about 10 deep when they ride out - ride illegally. As much as I would love to ride out with them, I don't fancy getting harassed by the police....getting too old for all that now lol.

The never ending project man!!. I'm picking her up tomorrow. Although there seems to be an issue. Hes getting good afs, cars running sweet but, is only boosting to .5 bar and I have a 0.8 spring: So not too sure if the springs at fault or the hes plumbed up the vac lines wrong? Is your bro running an ext wg? I'll email you the vid he sent me now.

sameas what I'm running mate....had a few issues today though as we forgot to fit the wg sealing ring...cars only boosting to .5 bar though, so I'm going to order another spring as thats the only other thing that could be at fault...feels good to be back in a starlet though :D

The husky 510s seem to be cheaper than the svx and 690s.....I'm sure you suggested them to me before?

Haha...my mechanic and his 6yo son were mega sad that they had to give it me back. Sounds the nuts, just need to solve my boost issue. Ordered a new spring for the wg yesterday so hopefully it solves my issue. What boost is your bro running and do you know what colour his spring is ?

Yeah seem to be just fine, going off the amount of people that use them without any issues. So I'm hoping its the spring that at fault i.e. its a .5 bar spring opposed to a 0.8 bar spring.

If you get a sec tell me what way he has his vac hoese connected? I've left the top nipple open on the wg, but some people run the vac line from the turbo to that nipple.

Yea the 510 are also the ones to go for you can get the 610 for about 2700-3000 there is one up for 3100 now with only 1500 miles on it . But the 510 is more race oriented which would be a nice choice to go for

Thanks for the offer mate, but the calling for the sxv is too strong! lol. Hopefully going to have a look at one at the weekend :).

Let me know how much you're selling the ktm for, I can always ask some other riders I know.

There is a 690 with only 12k on the clocks for 3600 on ebay if you still after one. Or if you really want some mad power there is a ktm 500 cc 2 stroke supermoto on there for 3k

Yeah I saw that..looks pretty nice. The ktm looked like a beast... I bet that would be a handful to ride.

Went to go and check out that sxv....It was dog rough, but the dude let me ride it around his yard....and WOW. The power was unreal compared to my 125. They sound sound even better in person. It had the tell tale signs of coolant and oil mixing though...not surprised really as its was an early 2006 version (orange selant) that hadn't really been looked after.

It was good to get a feel for one though....so I'm 100% wanting one of those next. I'm heading back to the centre where I passed my CBT this weekend. They said they would do a free assessment on me to see how many lessons they reccon I'd need.

So see how I get on from there.
