Right well this is turning into a build thread now so this is a good as time as any to start putting this into a thread.
So if any of you who don't know back in September I went to have a look at a 1994 Toyota Starlet GT Turbo EP82. A Japanese import that was imported over in 2006. These cars were only made for the Japanese Domestic Market only and everyone that made its way to the UK are imports. These are rare to find in the UK so I knew It was going to be a bit of a hit and miss finding one.
When I finally settled for one I unraveled a world of hurt and definitely can tell I was ripped off on it. But hey ho, such is life. I bought my Starlet only to have it break down on my drive. So I've had to strip it down and get building.
The day I picked it up. Specs:
WEPR Exhaust Manifold
Full HKS Power Silencer 3.5" Stainless Steel Exhaust
DCat system
Tein Coilovers
Front Mount Intercooler
Not really massive spec list. But for the moment I need to get it running so power will come later.
See in this photo that damp patch under the front left wheel. That's where the coolant expansion bottle sits. Pressure in the engine system is causing the water to boil over and leak onto the floor. I was lied to about the problem. Wasn't even described in the ad. Bastards!
Closer inspection I actually found that the car didn't even have an air filter. Just the Turbo....great. Fitted a relocation kit onto the turbo.
I bought some lovely Electrical Stack Boost and Oil pressure gauges to fit into this car. About £150 for these two gauges. But in order to fit the oil pressure gauge I needed to tap into the oil stream.
This sandwich plate allows me to do this:
But it's never a straight forward job is it! Before you can fit this you need to machine down the power steering pump.
When investigating this coolant leak I found that there was not thermostat. After replacing it I found that I could properly seal the thermostat housing. I then found out this is because there is an underlying problem, headgasket, cracked cylinder or cracked head.
So strip the engine down and whip the head off and have a look.
This is where I'm at now. Lack of funds and christmas means it's going to be a new year job. Get this head skimmed and pressure tested and build it back up and see how I get on....
This is the work I've done to the engine in the last month. But before this I've managed to source and fit some lovely bronze Rota Grids, got a gorgeous Pioneer sub. Fitted Pioneer tweeters and door speakers. Just need an amp to actually test it all.
Fixed the window motor on this car as well cause that was fooked.
Been building my CarPc as well that will go in. Pretty much there for the entertainment system. I will do more about that when I go back to the interior. For now it's just completely stripped so not much to show.
Always a great write up man, ill be looking forward to see what happens with it

i blew my dt up ... but i fixed it.... Then i crashed it.... but i didnt fix it right and 2 scouser's come in the middle of the night and left me with a working bike
Yeah cheers man, it's going to be new to me. I've never worked on cars before and have made some mistakes already. But such is life. At the end of the day, if I mess this all up...it's only money.
Well you'd probably still come out with more money than taking it to a mechanic in labour doing it yourself. Even with the odd mistake here and there. Just remember how to re-assemble everything. I find getting someone to video works a charm on the putting back together pieces.
shame you got ripped off in the first place. this is why I hate buying blind over the net.....you have to trust the add. I know a few who have gone miles to collect things to find they were not as described . i.e 300 miles to see a aprilia future 125 was a complete mutt with front calliper hanging off. then got the old story I'm just handing the bike and papers over for son/dad......I was very lucky with my gsx as the add sounded to good to be true and I panicked and hit the buy now button much #olloking from mates including one of their mums (thanks Lynda) but luckily for me it was a genuine add and got a good bike..... Always take someone who is neutral and not swayed by a shiny bike and #ull****
Tell me about it mate. The worst thing is, is that me and my bro got the same car. His was £200 bit more, better spec and works. But was in Ireland. But yeah he has his Starlet, driving around all over the gaff whereas I'm still stuck on the DT. That's the worst thing.
But I'm taking my time and not rushing. Have bought some more bits and bobs for this car and should be getting to the workshop soon to make some VERY SICK! interior bits. More than anything that's what I'm excited for. The interior. Spent £500+ on in car entertainment so am very excited about powering it all up :D
aI'm not going to lie to you...I'm losing the will to leave with this project. It's not like any project I've done before, it's so big in scope and is absolutely ruining my bank balance. In the past four weeks I have not done very much. Even since I've had the car I haven't done much.
With closer inspection I found out why my seat was stuck in gangster mode. Short story is it's fcked! Not sure how one damages it like it has but it's bad. The engine is still fcked. Haven't had much time/luck fixing it. Everything seems to go from bad to worse. But I see the light. I'm halfway through the engine work. I'm at the very last part that needs removing, but no surprises that I say that's gone wrong too!
The crankshaft pulley got destroyed whilst me taking it off, so I've had to order another. And the pulley puller I bought was a load of rubbish. Eventually I just rammed a fat off metal wedge in between the engine and the crankshaft pulley. Came off then.
I've been busy building the in car entertainment system and have made some real progress on this. It's by no way finished and it's difficult to implement, but it's getting there. See the video to see the full scope of its capability. But more will follow on that.
I'm replacing bits as I go, got uprated gear linkage bushes installed today, have uprated the engine mount with a polybush mount and am just about to install a new waterpump until I hit a problem. So that's going to be another week fixing it. I've bought a gorgeous D1 Spec oil catch can. Sold the hideous OMP steering wheel for a Momo one and have ordered a D1 Spec Carbon gearknob and a TRD (replica) carbon horn button. I bought some rare GT Indiglo dials and I love them. Have bought some nice Stack Oil, and boost gauges. New speakers all round, Pioneers. And a very funky pioneer sub that sits inside the spare wheel as to not take up space. Haven't wired it in yet. It will be wired into the Raspberry Pi when it's done and I still need an amp. Serious amounts of money spent on kit, but not the right kit lol.
I've also got a new bumper for this car as the JACKASS before cut the original bumper and it looked sh!t so I've got a nice new one that I still haven't unwrapped yet.
So here I'm just removing as much as possible to replace the cam belt and the water pump. Nothing much else going on.
That's the waterpump. It's off but one of the bolts shredded and is now being a bitch to remove :(
Here is the polybush engine mount
and here is the D1 Spec Oil Catch Can
Uncut front bumper with the JDM fogs :D
So for those of you who are interested. Here is the Car PC Project.
I'm using a Raspberry Pi Model B+, a credit card sized computer that is used for programming on. It's a fully fledged Linux based operating system called Raspbian. It does everything you would expect a normal computer to do, except this only costs £35. It also allows you to tap into the boards pins so that you peripherals such as rotary encoders, FM chip models and the likes. This nifty little computer may only run a 500 Mhz clock speed but it can still run full HD videos and play games like quake.
I've combined the raspberry pi with a £25 GPS device and using 'Andrei's' operating system I've been able to add in an open source satellite navigation program.
The raspberry pi is not capable of RTC (real time clock). When you turn it off, it will boot up with the last known time. Data gleaned from the GPS device on ttyACM0 can be used to update the Pi's real time, and bypass the fake RTC.
Amongst this bag of goodies, and not shown here, is an FM module chip that I've been able to install. As well as using songs already installed on the Pi, I wanted to be able to tune in to FM radio. This breakout board allows me to do just that.
As said two rotary encodes are also plugged into the boards GPIO pins to allow me to turn the volume up and down, and also select songs.
I've been able to extend the USB ports selection from 4 to 11 by using an external USB hub. This will allow you charge multiple devices via usb, as well as plug in memory sticks and play songs/games from that.
Although the not shown here, there is also a web browser should you need to use it.
I've been able to configure the Pi to accept internet connection via your phones connection (tethering). By using preexisting service program, Dhclient, I can get my phone to assign the pi a LocalIP address and start routing internet traffic. This can be used for RSS feeds directly fed into KODI and displayed in the media center.
The sky is literally the limit here, and I'v eonly begun to scratch the surface, you expect more updates as time moves on with this project. Currently limited by a slow clock speed and an ARM processor. It's not yet possible to run a Windows machine on the Pi (not that you would want to, Linux is far superior, lightweight and thus faster).
Can change the theme so that it's a little more 'Touch screen' friendly. PS checkout my rocking Toyota Logo :D
It's hard to hold it all together a take a shot. But it basically says Music Programs Shutdown on the right hand side. And Videos Navigation and Radio on the left. The settings is on the bottom and the time is up the top. Bitchin right :D
If you're interested then watch the video for how it's setup.
Hope you enjoy the write up, enjoy the videos and scan through the video to see how well quake runs :D

WOW I didn't know you knew so much about circuit boards and comps! Do you have to be able to write programmes yourself in order to get buttons etc to work?! I'm into the PC game myself and have considered sticking a raspberry pi into my van but know very little about creating circuit boards and how they interact with the pi. If it is possible, I assume it is somehow, I would love to have my cameras hooked up to the pi so I can record everything whilst driving!
Very easy pal. The pi is designed for this exact purpose. To learn. I was going to but I didn't bother. I used someone elses image. When I first got it working there was quite a lot involved. But now its as simple as an install. All you really need is basic understanding of a linux box.
Type 'Engineering Blog Spot diy car pc' into google and it's your first link.
To get it to this level of standard you want some programming knowledge but itMs nothing you can't learn yourself.
The hardest bit is getting installed nicely in the car. But there is bo reason you can't have it dash mounted.
that's the trouble when you start a custom build they are an absolute money pit. but it looks like it will be a smart motor when finished. just wish I had the time, money and knowhow to do something my self . which is why I'm going for a dt... parts are pretty cheep. =)
Yeah cheers. I see the light at the end of the tunnel though. As said I'm at the last part that needs removing. This weekend hopefully patch up the things that have broken and start on the rebuild...hopefully.
Don't need a spare raspberry pi do you callum? I have a starter kit that I've never used sitting in my drawers. On another note though, ****ing awesome idea and you'll put those swag fags to shame with that install. None of this ipad in the dash ****! I love abit of computer programming me! :D
Yeah I appreciate that Carlos. It's taken serious man hours just to prep everything and get it to this stage. I wouldn't knock the tablet idea. They're still pretty sweet. But this was purely about building a customer operating system. Recompiling the Kernel to enable the touch screen and setting the pi to be able to read the GPS device.
It's a good build but it's not for everyone. The fact that I can SSH into it from my computer in my room, or anywhere in the world, is quite sweet. It means once it's installed all I have to do is modify the code remotely. So long as the pi is on and connected to the internet I can connect to it anywhere in the world.
But it has its own limitations, one I've been trying to solve for quite some time but it is proving challenging.
The Pi's audio output quality is some what low. And I've been trying different solutions as to how to get around improving the quality by installing external soundcards. The only problem is is that you need to recompile the Kernel from source to enable the use of a soundcard. this is not only challenging but also goes against the work done to enable touch screen. There is also the problem that the soundcard uses up all the GPIO pins and as such means I can't connect the FM radio. Or the rotary encoders.
I'm working on it, but at the moment I have the ability to switch between using the pi's output for sound or switch over to an AUX cable from there I can use my iPod which will output far superior sound. I'm working on a solution about how to fix this. It's on going.
Just a few photos missed off the update. My new (old) steering wheel. Really hated the OMP on there so flogged that on and got myself a nice Momo.
Also here is the rare GT Indiglos. I managed to get myself the very last one so I was chuffed with that.
The beauty of these indiglos is that they sit on top of the original faces. Don't have to butcher any wiring or anything. So they're easy to return to stock after I'm finished.
They come with a variable colour setting but I chose to have it blue.
Loving the dash! Great use of one of those raspberry pi. Very creative and so many things you could do with it! Tried to get into linux myself but couldn't be bothered and just put windows back on ahaha.
Well I dunno if I said, but the drivers side seat was FCKED! Don't even know how One does this to a seat. But they chewed off like 6-10 teeth on the ratchet and as such it was stuck in gangster mode! I dismantled it in the hope of repairing it, but it was simply beyond repair. And new rails costing around £200 I was just like Nah, fck this!
Then I found these:
For an absolute BARGAIN. In mint condition apparently. The seller is genuine I purchase loads of him. And they are literally mint. Actually a shame for me to have them because I'm a little hard wearing with things. But this is my motor and I look aftet stuff I actually car about.
Needless to say I bought them, next day they've arrived. I'll fit them....never maybe. Dunno I'll see how I get on lol. The old seats are on the forum ready for sale.
Nice cal there is a light at the end of the tunnel, just keep at it man

i blew my dt up ... but i fixed it.... Then i crashed it.... but i didnt fix it right and 2 scouser's come in the middle of the night and left me with a working bike
Picked up the cylinder head this morning. Had to hike it there and back carrying the bloody thing. 2 miles is a LONG way carrying this heavy mofo! My arms have been dead all day and haven't been able to do any work to it. It's got lots of swarf and shít in there so it's going to need some serious elbow grease when I get time.
The head passed the pressure test, not cracked, but was severely warped! The guy says highly unlikely to warp the block and he's confident the bore wouldn't be cracked. So it's literally bang this altogether now and fire it up.
This guy I took the head to! Fúck me. He should be retired. Been doing this job for 45 years in his little man cave. And literally, I bet he has never swept up once in his entire life. And that's an understatement of how messy this place was. Literally couldn't find the guy when I walked into this little shed. Over the mountains of engines he had lying about the place. I don't know whether I'd use him again. He's a cracking bloke and certainly knows his stuff, but I can't see him being delicate with my bits.
Money's tied up in some other things atm. Need to get some shít sold to work on both the bike and the car. Lots more bits needed for the car whilst its in this state. And I can't fix the bike till the car is on the road lol.
But hopefully this weekend I'll put the head back together and get it ready to go on the car next weekend. Still need braided oil return hoses and a whiteline anti roll bar. And loads of other parts that are just worth getting at this point in time.
Ha! It really shouldn't be taking this long. I just like taking my time. That said I'm pretty sure this is going to go bang when I fire her up....close now.
Going to be getting some twin pot calipers for this next month. Interior still needs sorting out. So there is still much work to do!
Polybushed the rest of the engine mounts now :D
This one was a right pain in backside to fit on axle stands lol. If it wasn't the anti-roll bar then it was the exhaust that got in my way :@ Done now at least.
Stainless steel braided oil feed hose. Cost me quite a bit but a well worth while investment
Start putting it all back together. Don't worry, I'm not using that manky rocker cover. That's temporary.
Getting there ^^^^ :D
Spent a good hour or so polishing the cams. The one on the left has been done compared to the one on the right.
But it's a bad photo.
It's almost done. I need a few bits I broke upon disassemble and then I can time the engine up.
I have a nice clear perspex cam belt cover :D So will be able to keep an eye on the cam belt.
Few more plans for this before I actually start driving it. But all in good time.
Well boys and girls...it's come to that point in every project where we separate the men from the boys. I've well and truly fücked things up for myself now. And it's that decision that I need to make.
Do I cut my losses and get rid of this useless piece of ****. Or do I press on and persevere. I have no car and no bike. Getting parts to workshops is ridiculously hard without transport. And I just can't do it anymore.
If my DT hadn't have failed I wouldn't be so bothered. But I really don't know anymore. I've got some thinking to do on this one.
The damage I've just done sets me back to where I was in December. And I just know that even if I persevere, press on, keep going, I will only end up messing something else up. And I'll be back to square one again.
It's a lot of money wasted. I mean you're talking a good few thousand on a car I've never driven. But it's going to cost me so much If I keep going. Money doesn't bother me. As far as I'm concerned it was a crash course into car mechanicS. i've learnt a ridiculously large amount for such a brief period of time.
As said I don't know. This car is going on the back burner now. Fck it. I need my bike sorted because the old faithful DT deserves a lot more than to just sit in two boxes doing nothing.
On the plus side I found a nice spot for the oil catch can.
Snapped a bolt in the cam shaft journal. Last fcking bolt as well. It will mean me stripping off the head and starting all over again. Can't believe my luck on this car. It's unreal. I was so careful all the way through, just got wreckless at the end.
Still haven't even driven this car yet. I've probably driven my brothers more than I've driven mine, and I've definitely spent more time in his. The fact that I need this car to fix my bike is the real kicker in the nuts.
