Gone from a Big one full system to a dep full system
Permalink

Hi Fellas

DTR 125 2000

had been running a Big one system for the last year and a bit, with a 260 main jet to suit, went perfectly pulled like a train after 8000k revs.  ran as it should and plug was a near perfect colour, it was lovely was real pleased with it. would hit 75 on a flat with no wind

anyway it rusted and developed a hole at the manifold so i brought a Full Dep System assuming this would be a improvement even if just a small one.

turns out it isn't no!! bike now feels dull and the powerband doesn't feel as prominent and it struggles to gain revs above 6000rpm, i have of course down jetted to a 250 main jet as dep suggest a 240 main which is stock for my year.

bike is now 10 mph slower than with a big one what's going on !!

i will add the only thing that has changed is the full exhaust system and the main jet.

any help as always is appreciated!

cheers

That is funny. Research the big one pipe and you will the very opposite to what you are saying. I've had a few pipes in my time. The DEP system has a very nice band on it. BUT terrible metal quality results in them rusting fairly quickly.

Sounds like a powervave issue. A pipe will shift the band up and down, that's a given. It is also proven that dents in the pipe can also be beneficial to midrange power. But it's rare that it would kill performance.

Granted the Big One pipe did kill performance under 8000rpm, but above that it was faultless went like sh*t of a shovel,

maybe i just need to get used to the characteristics of the new pipe! it pulls better bottom and mid range but up top is pants. did just manage 70mph on the way to work. seams it takes a bit longer to get there tho.

power valve does open fully and have strapped the go pro to the frame and it doesnt close again at the 65mph as is suggested by other people,

like i said maybe i just need to get used to it, its just not as thrash-able anymore :(

what kinds of speeds do you expect from a dep ?

cheers

I'd bet money on it being your jetting that's wrong.

The DEP is a high revving pipe, had no issues at all with mine and only went on to swap it for a hand made cone section built pipe.

When I was running my DEP the carb was left on standard settings and had no issues at all, perfect choco brown plug colour and pulled like a train upto 12k rpm.

And my DT would do 80+ all day long with the DEP pipe.

Cheers Lads

ill give it a go on a 240 main instead of the 250 see if it makes a difference.

i would rather over fuel than under but i suppose the trade off is power!

ill let you know if the jet change sorts it

once again thanks

Not really over fueling. Plus the leaner you can make the mixture, the more performance you can get. To an extent of course.
