hi all,

i have recently bought a yamaha dtr125 for off road use, it is the model with the power valve servo on etc etc,

i took off the exhaust and lined the power valve up so its fully open, and when i put it all back together it was still open, but when i start the bike the power vale shuts opens then stays shut again,

at the moment i have disconnected the servo so its in the fully open position, the bike goes well but is very slow accelerating then has a sudden burst of power, which is hard work in the woods,

the bike has no battery fitted o it would this make a difference to the power valve servo opening and closing at all?

cheers

Once the bike is running it should get all is electrical power from the stator. The stator also provides enough power to recharge the battery if one is fitted.

Not having a battery fitted shouldnt make any difference to how the bike runs. As you've pinned the PV open it wont have alot of power below 6000rpm but itll fly once it hits 7000rpm

If you want something more controllable I'd reconnect the PV servo as this will open the PV gradually giving you more usable power throughout the rev range.

Have you taken the PV cover off to see if its moving when revving the bike?

It should look something like this....http://www.dtr125.net/videohtml/ypvs/ypvsvideo.htm

Do you mean you have made you own loom up? What year is the bike? Does it have 3 or 5 wires comin off the servo? Do you have a reed switch in the clock unit?

Aint electrics great!

arnt they just, no ive not made my own loom, ive bought it as a field bike and it had been plugged because there was no key for the ignition, so i took the barrel apart and adjusted it so it is permentally on, but it always shuts the power valve off so i just plugged it again, i will look to see how many wires the servo has tomorrow, will it make any difference how many it has cheers

Whether it has 3 or 5 wires the servo should still open and close Older bikes have 3 wires while '97 onwards have 5 and have differnet connections to the CDI. Have a look on the wiring diagrams here http://www.dtr125.net/wiringf.htm and double check youve got all the right wires going to the right places

ive got the old (non-servo) type and also the barrel for the servo type ypvs, what i did was disconnect the servo wires and place a trusty self tapping wood screw thru the plastic guide and banged it straight into the barrel itself. granted it aint variable but it keeps the damn thing open!!!!!

and teh reason for the low power then all hell breaks loose is b'coz the powervalve is set to full power, you'll probs find you wont have the power to push 5th or 6th shud your bike run long enough to get there.

The old Valves were held in place by a brass washer with a cut  out etc, what i did to the new 1 was put a screw thru the black plastic slide (were the cables go around) and screw that into the hole behind it! then y0pour valve stays open! job done tried and tested! the valve adjustment parts dont really matter! u aint got the servo so get the valve were u want it and fix it up!
