Problems with electric starter
Permalink

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of hassle with the electric starter on my bike and was wondering if anyone has any ideas of a fix... Basically, even with a fully charged battery, when I hit the starter all I get is the buzzing of the relay under the seat and the motor doesn't kick in. What's stranger is that when the engine's running, if I hit the starter you can hear the starter happily whirring away so it's not seized or anything. I wouldn't care if I had a kickstart as an option but I'm currently having to bump start it every time! Cheers,

Dave

I bet the starter gear is stuck and not engaging the flywheel. Take the starter off and give it a dose of WD40 to free it up.

I'm currently lookin in to fitting a kickstart to my tdr

Is that removed via the 2(?) screws on the bottom of the engine? I was also considering a kickstarter but don't know how easy this is... there's a blanking plug where one could go but willl a DT/TZR unit bolt straight in or is it an engine out/apart job?

Cheers,

Dave

Yeah just the 2 screws. Be careful not to round them off tho cos they tend to be quite rusty. Why Yamaha decided to used screws and not bolts is beyond me

Adding a kick start isnt as easy as it sounds. Iv not take the casing off yet but i beleive that the kick start cog doesnt drive the clutch flywheel directly....there is another pinion gear to be added which mean taking the whole clutch basket off. You'll also need an oil seal where the kickstart shaft comes thought the casing.

Sounds harder than I'd hoped!! I'm thinking part of my problem may be a dodgy earth or electrical problems of some sort as I've started to notice the headlight slightly flashing when using the indicators and the speed of the indicators changing with different combinations of lights on!! D'oh!!

Have you tried the starter motor on 12v battery just to double check that it is working correctly? The drive cog should shoot out and spin like on a car starter motor. When you remove the voltage supply the cog will return to where it came. If i remeber correctly the starter motor gets its live from the battery via the relay under the seat and its earthed to the battery via the engine with some fairly hefty cable.

Do your lights do funny things when the bike idling or even when your riding? My lights dim and revs drop when at idle but return to full brightness when its reved up. Sounds like your getting a serious current drain off the genny....look out for short circuits.

I love electrics

the lights only tend to do funny things at idle although when sitting in the middle of the road waiting to turn right it's quite fun to alter the revs and use the brake to change the speed of the indicators!! HAve just ordered an impact screw driver to get the starter off so we'll see what's up once that arrives.

Ay mine does that too when the batterys flat. The stator/genny isnt strong enough at idle to produce a steady voltage. Once the battery is charged is evens out the voltage a little

Hmm...so if my battery's flat where's the charge going?!! The battery was brand new about a month ago and it suddenly seems to be doing virtually nothing! Is there an easy way of tracing a bad earth or dodgy connection?

A charge may not even be being produced....worst case the charging coil of the stator could have gone/onitswayout. You'd need to check the resistance of the stator windings using a multimeter. I dont have the readings at the mo but im sure they'll be about somewhere

tracing earth problems is a major pain in the back side! Best thing to is take all the earth connections and clean them one at a time. Clean any frame contacts from rust and paint making the contacts nice n shiney. Dissconnect the live to the battery. Using a multimeter from the negative of the battery to every earth point you should have zero resistance

Well, after a couple of months push starting the bike I decided to do something about it and tried my old battery... guess what! The damn thing works perfectly and fires instantly! It appears that the pattern battery I got from Wemoto is completely fooked!! Since taking it out of the bike my charger doesn't even register there's a battery there with the Wemoto one... clearly something very very wrong!! Wish I'd swapped them back a long time ago now...
