I've just bought a 04 DTRE, never had a bike before and my mechanical knowledge is comparable to that of a small blind child. My bike came with no manual or instructions either so I'm in a bit of a predicament.
I've found the 2 stroke oil reservoir, but on the other side of the bike is a smaller reservoir.... I've read up on it as much as possible and think it's for coolant. If it is, should I use pure water or do I need to mix it with something? If it's for something else, what is it?
Any other tips or things I need to know would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Sounds to me like you're describing the coolant expansion tank. It should max and min levels on it. Provided the system is full (engine been run then when cooled if you remove the radiator cap it's full), you should top up the expansion tank to the max mark using a solution of water and antifreeze/summer coolant which you can get at any garage or hellfrauds etc.
the coolant expansion tank is the small plastic one under the seat/seat pannel
never had to touch mine, but im sure i read in the haynes manual it said the level had to be in the middle of the min and max lines, not filled up to max
you should check the manual
also...as i should check mine tomorrow, whats the ratio of water/anti freeze to mix ? is it just normal car antifreeze ?
My mate sticks just pure anti freeze in his bike but i think i will put a 50/50 mix in mine when the time comes, yeah i think any anti freeze is ok to put in as anti freeze is anti freeze init??
im just gonna check mine in a min, do you ever change the radiator coolant/topp that up ?
ive never even opened the cap on mine, the temp gage never goes above half way odd so presume all is well, but just wonderd what intervals it should be changed or topped up or whatever ?
Sorry mate i was talking about the radiator, yeah if its around half way top it up 50/50 with anti freeze and water,i havnt had to top up the coolent tank under me seat as it never seems to go down but i think i would put pure anti freeze in there.
